Swindon Town F
Swindon () is a town in Wiltshire, England. At the time of the 2021 Census the population of the built-up area was 183,638, making it the largest settlement in the county. Located at the northeastern edge of the South West England region, Swindon lies on the M4 corridor, 84 miles (135 km) to the west of London and 36 miles (57 km) to the east of Bristol. The Cotswolds lie just to the town's north and the North Wessex Downs to its south. Recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as ''Suindune'', the arrival of the Great Western Railway in 1843 transformed it from a small market town of 2,500 into a thriving railway hub that would become one of the largest Swindon Works, railway engineering complexes in the world at its peak. Charles Bannister (1879 – August 1952) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Manchester City and Lincoln City and in the Southern League for Swindon Town and Reading. Frank Burrows
Frank Burrows (30 January 1944 – 24 November 2021) was a Scottish football player and manager who played as a central defender. Life and career Frank Burrows began his football career at Scottish club Raith Rovers. In 1965, he moved south to England and joined Scunthorpe United. Impressive performances as a defender for Scunthorpe led to him being signed by Swindon Town F.C. for the 1968–69 season as a replacement for the departing Mel Nurse. Burrows was a major factor in helping Swindon to their most successful ever season in which they won promotion and the League Cup. Burrows played alongside team captain Stan Harland in the middle of a defence that conceded just 35 goals in 46 League matches. He went on to make over 350 appearances for Swindon. At the start of the 1973–74 season he was made a player coach, such was the feeling that he was a natural leader as well as a solid defender. Dennis Brown (English Footballer)
Dennis John Brown (born 8 February 1944) is an English former professional footballer who played as a forward. Club career Born in Reading, Brown started his career with Battle Athletic before joining Chelsea, where he made his debut in 1963. He scored on his league debut against Manchester United, but would only go on to register nine more league appearances before being sold to Swindon Town in 1964. He stayed at Swindon until 1967, when he was transferred to Northampton Town in an exchange for Bobby Jones. After just eight games for Northampton Town, Brown was involved in a serious car accident, in which he lost one kneecap and was sidelined for almost a year. He was unable to find his scoring form after the injury, and left for Aldershot Town in 1969. After leaving the professional game, Brown moved to non-league side Margate in 1975. Ted Braithwaite
Edward Braithwaite (12 December 1902 – 1990) was an English footballer who made 292 appearances in the Football League for Bradford City, Reading and Swindon Town. Born in Salford he was signed from New Cross of the Manchester Football League by Bradford City in December 1921. Between 1921 and 1924 he made a total of 17 appearances for Bradford City in the Football League (2 in the Football League First Division and 15 in Football League Second Division) and 1 in the FA Cup. Both goals he scored for 'The Bantams' were in a Division 2 home fixture against Fulham in December 1922. In the summer of 1924 he signed with Reading then of the Football League Third Division South and was a regular member of the team that were the 1925–1926 champions of that division and promoted to Division Two. Archie Bown
Archie Bown (1882 – 19 August 1958) was a football inside left. Football career Born in Highworth, Wiltshire, Bown began his football career playing for the local Swindon Casuals team. It was here that Swindon Town spotted him and offered him a trial, playing one first team match in February 1904. Having not proved himself adequately he returned to his old team and his job as a turner and fitter in the Great Western Railway's Workshop. Bown returned to Swindon Town in 1907, signing a professional contract. He went on to score 9 goals in 16 appearances that season and regularly appeared on the scoresheet from then on. 1911/12 was his most prolific season for the club, when he scored 23 goals in Southern League matches. Paul Bodin
Paul John Bodin (born 13 September 1964) is a Welsh former professional footballer and coach who is the coach of the Wales under-21 team. His son, Billy Bodin, is also a professional footballer. A former Chelsea youth team product, he moved to Cardiff City via Newport County in 1982. He helped Cardiff to win promotion out of the Third Division in 1982–83. He returned to non-League football with Merthyr Tydfil and Bath City in 1985 before rejoining Newport for a £15,000 fee in January 1988. Two months later he was sold on to Swindon Town for twice this sum and became the club's first-choice left-back, helping them to win the 1990 Second Division play-off final and winning himself a place on the PFA Team of the Year in 1990–91.
