Australia is renowned as one of the world's premier surfing destinations. Surfing underpins an important part of the Australian coastal fabric. Association Of Surfing Professionals
The World Surf League (WSL) is the governing body for professional surfers and is dedicated to showcasing the world's best talent in a variety of progressive formats. The WSL was originally known as International Professional Surfing (IPS), founded by Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick in 1976. IPS created the first world circuit of pro surfing events. In 1983, the Association of Surfing Pros (ASP) took over management of the world circuit. In 2013, the ASP was acquired by ZoSea, backed by Paul Speaker, Terry Hardy, and Dirk Ziff. Bob McTavish
Bob McTavish (born 1944) is an Australian surfboard designer and member of the surfing hall of fame. He is often credited with the invention of the V-bottom surfboard and was one of a number of pioneering surfer/shapers considered instrumental in the development of shortboard surfing. It has been suggested that without his contributions, the revolutionary nature of shortboard surfing wouldn't have been as effective. Early life Born in Mackay, Queensland in 1944, McTavish began surfing at the age of twelve. He dropped out of school at 15, and moved to Sydney. In 1963, McTavish famously stowed away in an ocean liner bound for Hawaii. He spent 5 weeks in Hawaii before being deported. In the 1970s, McTavish became a Jehovah’s Witness. Surfing McTavish began surfing on a 16-foot (4.8m) plywood paddleboard. Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (August 24, 1890 – January 22, 1968) was a Hawaiian competition swimmer, lifeguard, and popularizer of the sport of surfing. A Native Hawaiian, he was born three years before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. He lived to see the territory's admission as a state and became a United States citizen. He was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming, winning medals in 1912, 1920 and 1924. Kahanamoku joined fraternal organizations: he was a Scottish Rite Freemason in the Honolulu lodge, and a Shriner. He worked as a law enforcement officer, an actor, a beach volleyball player, and a businessman. Noosa Festival Of Surfing
The Noosa Festival of Surfing was established in 1992 at Noosa, Queensland by members of the ''Noosa Malibu Club'', as an amateur surfing competition called the ''Noosa Malibu Classic''. It allowed club members to invite friends to surf Noosa's right-hand point breaks and the event's popularity among competitive longboarders gave the club a chance to take the event to a higher level. In 1996 a professional division was introduced and prompted the name change to ''The Noosa Festival of Surfing'' (NFoS) in 1998.
