Strabomantidae
The Strabomantidae, sometimes called cloud forest landfrogs, are a family of frogs native to South America. These frogs lack a free-living larval stage and hatch directly into miniature "froglets". This family includes '' Pristimantis'', the most speciose genus of any vertebrate. Based on molecular dating, the Holoadeninae in particular appears to have originated in the Eocene. The Oligocene-Miocene transition was also found to be important to their biogeographical history. However, the lack of Holoadeninae fossils and limited nucleotide Nucleotides are Organic compound, organic molecules composed of a nitrogenous base, a pentose sugar and a phosphate. They serve as monomeric units of the nucleic acid polymers – deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA), both o ... data ambiguates the results, by the authors' admission. Systematics The following subfamilies and genera are in the family Strabomantidae. *Holoadeninae **'' Bahius'' Dubois, Ohler, and Pyron, ...

Pristimantis
''Pristimantis'' is a very specious genus of frogs distributed in the southern Caribbean islands (Lesser Antilles) and in Central and South America from Honduras to northern Argentina and southern Brazil. With 617 described species (as of February 2025), the genus has more species than any other vertebrate genus. Many of these species genus are endemic to the Northwestern Andean montane forests ecoregion in north-western South America. Etymology From the Greek πρίστις (serrated) and μάντις (arboreal frog). Taxonomy Placement of this genus has varied greatly. ''Pristimantis'' was long included in the massive genus '' Eleutherodactylus'', and considered part of the family Leptodactylidae. Currently, the genus is placed in the family Strabomantidae The Strabomantidae, sometimes called cloud forest landfrogs, are a family of frogs native to South America. Psychrophrynella
''Psychrophrynella'' is a genus of frogs in the family Strabomantidae The genus is distributed on the Andes of southern Peru and Bolivia. One of the four species assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is assessed as "Critically Endangered". The name ''Psychrophrynella'' is a Contraction (grammar), contraction of the Greek ' meaning cold and ''phrynos'' meaning toad, with the Greek diminutive suffix ''ella''. It refers to their relatively cold habitats. Description Species of the genus ''Psychrophrynella'' are small frogs measuring between snout–vent length. They are characterized by narrow head, absence of differentiated Tympanum (anatomy), tympanic membrane (except in ''Psychrophrynella boettgeri'') and, in most species, absence of tympanic annulus. Dorsum (anatomy), Dorsum is smooth, granular, or shagreen. Venter is finely granular, granular, or coarsely granular (but smooth in ''Psychrophrynella pinguis''). Species The following species are r ...
