Helen Stephens
Helen Herring Stephens (February 3, 1918 – January 17, 1994) was an American athlete and a double Olympic champion in 1936. Biography Stephens, nicknamed the "Fulton Flash" after her birthplace, Fulton, Missouri, was a strong athlete in sprint events—she never lost a race in her entire career—and also in weight events such as the shot put and discus throw. She won national titles in both categories. When she was 18, Stephens participated in the 1936 Summer Olympics. There she won the 100 m final, beating reigning champion and world record holder, Stanisława Walasiewicz (aka Stella Walsh) of Poland. Stephen's time of 11.5 s was below the world record, but was not recognized because a strong tailwind was blowing at the time of the race. John Stephens (bishop)
John R. Stephens is a Canadian Anglican archbishop. Since 28 February 2021, he has been the tenth bishop of New Westminster in the Anglican Church of Canada (ACC), and in January 2025 he was elected metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of British Columbia and Yukon. Biography Stephens grew up in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia and was raised in the Anglican Church. He earned an undergraduate degree in science from the University of British Columbia and graduated from the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad in Saskatoon. After ordination, he served a rural three-point parish in the Diocese of Huron. In 1995, Stephens returned to British Columbia and became rector of St. John the Divine, Squamish. Jane Tryphoena Stephens (1812? – 15 January 1896) was a British actress who became famous as she became older. Life Her first surname is unknown as she sometimes appeared as "Miss Stephens". She had a husband called Joseph Stephens who was a solicitor's clerk. Before she took to the stage in 1840 she ran a tobacconists. She took a variety of roles but it was not until 1854 that she found her niche. She took on "grandmotherly" type roles in a number of productions and was affectionately known as "Granny" Stephens. She finished her career on 9 July 1889 with a benefit programme at the Shaftesbury Theatre. The committee responsible for promoting the show included R D'Oyly Carte, George Edwardes and C H Hawtrey. Stephens died in Clapham Common in 1896 of bronchitis. Jane Stephens (9 October 1879 – 11 December 1959) was an Irish zoologist who was considered a leading authority on Porifera, sponges in Ireland with specialised knowledge in other marine life who identified and named over 40 sponges new to science. From 1905 to 1920 she was employed in the Natural History Museum (Ireland), Natural History Division of the National Museum of Ireland working primarily on the collections of marine invertebrates, including taking part in the Clare Island Survey. James Francis Stephens (16 September 1792 – 22 December 1852) was an England, English entomologist and naturalist. He is known for his 12 volume ''Illustrations of British Entomology'' (1846) and the ''Manual of British Beetles'' (1839). Early life Stephens was born in Shoreham-by-Sea and studied at Christ's Hospital. His father was a navy captain William James Stephens (d. 1799) and his mother was Mary Peck (later Mrs Dallinger). He went to school at the Blue Coat School, Hertford and later at Christ's Hospital, London. He was then sent to study under Shute Barrington (1734–1826), the bishop of Durham in 1800. Jackson Tanner Stephens (born May 11, 1994) is an American professional baseball pitcher in the Atlanta Braves organization. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Cincinnati Reds.
