Moederkerk, Stellenbosch
The Moederkerk (''Mother Church'') in Stellenbosch is the second oldest congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. Foundation The congregation was founded, just 21 years after the Groote Kerk in Cape Town, by Rev. Johannes Overney who came from Cape Town to hold the first service "in one of the best situated and ablest Vrijmans Woningen" on Sunday 13 October 1686, on which occasion he preached on Isaiah 52:7: "Hoe lievelijk zijn op de bergen the feet of those who bring good tidings of peace; those who bring good tidings of good; those who say to Zion: Your God is King." In the afternoon he baptized three children. As a consultant, he visited the congregation every three months and in the meantime the services were observed by the sick roster Mankadan. Afrikaans
Afrikaans is a West Germanic languages, West Germanic language spoken in South Africa, Namibia and to a lesser extent Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and also Argentina where there is a group in Sarmiento, Chubut, Sarmiento that speaks the Patagonian Afrikaans, Patagonian dialect. Simon Van Der Stel
Simon van der Stel (14 October 1639 – 24 June 1712) was the first Governor of the Dutch Cape Colony (1691), the settlement at the Cape of Good Hope. He was interested in botany, establishing vineyards Groot Constantia, Groot and Klein Constantia, and producing a famous dessert wine. He is considered one of the founders of South African viticulture. Background Simon was the son of Ariaen or Adriaan van der Stel an official of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and Maria Lievens, who married in March 1639 in Batavia. His mother, was of mixed-race descent and the daughter of Dutchman Hendrick Lievens and a Malaysia, Malay or Indian freed slave. In the same year Adriaan was appointed the first Dutch governor of Mauritius. Adriaan replaced 'Onderkoopman' Pieter de Goijer who was sent by the Dutch East India Company in 1638 with 25 men and cattle, sheep, geese, chickens and rabbits to start the new refreshment station for the Company. Dutch ( ) is a West Germanic languages, West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, spoken by about 25 million people as a first language and 5 million as a second language and is the List of languages by total number of speakers, third most spoken Germanic language. Stellenbosch Mountain
Stellenbosch Mountain (Afrikaans: Stellenbosberg or Die Groteberg) is a mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the town of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The mountain forms part of the Coetsenburg Estate, the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, the Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve and the larger Hottentots-Holland Mountains Catchment Area. Geology The peak of Stellenbosch Mountain is 1,156m. The source of the Blaauwklippen (Blouklip) River is near the peak. The range is primarily composed of Table Mountain Sandstone. The climate is typically Mediterranean; warm and temperate, classified as Csb by the Köppen-Geiger system. However, it is generally much cooler and more verdant than other areas in the Western Cape, with annual precipitation at 802mm in the lowlands. Eerste River
The Eerste River, located in the Western Cape, South Africa, rises on Dwarsberg 60 km east of Cape Town at the head of Jonkershoek valley. The Eerste River catchment covers the eastern part of the Cape Flats lying to the west of the Hottentots Holland Mountains and south of the Tygerberg where the Kuils River tributary rises east of Kanonkop. The Eerste River is a short river; its length has been given as 40 km. The major tributary, Kuils River, is approximately 30 km long to its point of confluence with the Eerste River. For a significant part of its course, the river flows through the City of Cape Town. A population of the endangered local endemic Berg River Redfin (''Pseudobarbus burgi'') was found in the Eerste River, but may be extinct in this river system. Postal codes were introduced in South Africa on 8 October 1973, with the introduction of automated sorting. Format South African postal codes consist of four digits. Mail may be delivered either to the physical address or to a PO Box, particularly in rural areas where no street delivery is available. In addition, many large organisations may use Private Bag addresses, with mail dispatched to the holder by a mail contractor. In the case of cities and large towns, however, the last two digits of the postal code indicate the mode of delivery.
