Stellenbosch Football Club is a professional Association football, football club based in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Founded in 2016 following the relocation of Vasco da Gama (South Africa), Vasco da Gama FC to Stellenbosch, the club is the first Premier Soccer League team from the Cape Winelands District Municipality, Cape Winelands region and was promoted to the South African Premiership in 2019. The first team plays its home matches at the Danie Craven Stadium. Domestically, the club has won the National First Division in 2019, earning promotion to the top-flight for the first time in the process, and the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup, which saw the team become the inaugural champions of the revamped competition. Sammy Troughton
Samuel Edward Troughton (born 27 March 1964 in Lisburn, Northern Ireland) is a Northern Irish former footballer who played as a forward and now a coach. Playing career Club Troughton played for Glentoran and Wolverhampton Wanderers before coming to South Africa in 1985 to play for Jomo Cosmos, Mamelodi Sundowns and then Orlando Pirates. He was popularly known as "Special Branch" during his playing days in South Africa. In 1986, he briefly played for Crusaders, playing two league games in two days against Linfield and Glentoran (scoring in the latter) in December 1986. Management career After retiring from his playing career, Troughton coached mainly lower league South African sides like Arcadia Shepherds, Pretoria University and Durban Stars. Carling Knockout
The Carling Knockout Cup is a South African professional soccer knockout competition which comprises the 16 teams in the South African Premiership. The Carling Knockout Cup is the third of the three main cups administered by the PSL along with the MTN 8 and the Nedbank Cup. The Carling Knockout Cup was first held in 1982 as the Datsun Challenge, and in 2023 under its current sponsored name. Format The format used in this competition is the Knockout Stage phase. The competition will be played by 16 teams in a single knockout match. A winner will be decided after full-time (90 minutes). If the two teams playing against each other are still tied after full-time, then the match will go through to extra time. If the score is still tied, then the match will go to penalties. The MTN 8 is a South African soccer single-elimination tournament, cup competition launched in 1972 for teams who finished in the top 8 positions of the league table of the country's preceding season of the top-flight league (currently the South African Premiership, Premiership).
