Steigen () is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Salten. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Leinesfjorden. Other villages include Leirvikbogen, Leines, Nordfold, Nordskot, and Sørskot. Engeløy Airport, Grådussan is located in the northern part of the municipality. Måløy–Skarholmen Lighthouse is located in the Vestfjorden in the western part of the municipality. The only road access to the municipality is via the Steigen Tunnel. The municipality is the 114th largest by area out of the 357 municipalities in Norway. Steigen is the 245th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 2,672. Steigen Church
Steigen Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Steigen Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the small village of Steigen on the southwestern side of the island of Engeløya. It is the main church for the Steigen parish which is part of the Salten prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland. The brown and gray, stone church was originally built in a Churches in Norway#Floor plan, long church style around the year 1250, and it has since been renovated and expanded several times. The church seats about 400 people. History The earliest existing records of the church at Steigen date back to 1432, however there are records of the priest of Steigen dating back to 1321. The church building was likely built around the year 1250 based on archaeological excavations around the building. Steigen Tunnel
The Steigen Tunnel () is a road tunnel in Nordland county, Norway. The long tunnel is located on the Norwegian County Road 835 highway in Hamarøy Municipality and Steigen Municipality. The tunnel begins at the village of Tømmerneset in Hamarøy Municipality and heads northwest through the Veggfjellan mountain to the northwest, exiting the mountain at the Forsan farm in Steigen Municipality. The tunnel is wide and has an interior height of about . The tunnel was completed in 1990 and from 1990 until 2005, it was the longest road tunnel in Nordland county. The Steigen Tunnel gave Steigen Municipality a ferry-free road connection. Prior to 1990, the only way to get to Steigen Municipality was by using the ferries between Skutvika and Leirvikbogen and between Røsvika and Nordfold. Salten
Salten is a traditional district in Nordland county, Norway. It includes the municipalities of Gildeskål, Bodø, Beiarn, Saltdal, Fauske, Sørfold, Steigen, and Hamarøy. Salten covers an area of about and has a population (2016) of about 73,375 people.
