Steenwijkerland
Steenwijkerland (; or ) is a municipality in the province of Overijssel, in the eastern Netherlands. Prior to a name change in 2003, it was known as Steenwijk. The municipality forms the entire northwesterly corner of the province. This area is called "the Head of Overijssel" (in Dutch: ''de Kop van Overijssel''). It borders the province Friesland. The seat of the municipality, Steenwijk, with a population of about 17,100, is situated on the A32 motorway (Zwolle – Meppel – Leeuwarden) and has a railway station on the line connecting those same cities. Economy Steenwijk is the economic and administrative centre of the region. Many smaller trading and industrial enterprises are housed here, as well as a hospital and some secondary schools. Vollenhove has a shipyard, where very exclusive yachts are built. All over the area, partially being below sea level, the soil is somewhat swampy. Many Steenwijkerland farmers only raise cattle. Baarlo, Steenwijkerland
Baarlo is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality Steenwijkerland, about 1 km northwest of the city of Blokzijl. It was first mentioned in 1219 as Barlo, and means "barren forest". During the Middle Ages, it used to have a chapel, however it was damaged in a 1825 flood, and demolished in 1836. Until the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed, the village lay on the dyke of the IJsselmeer. In 1840, it was home to 145 people. Baarlo should not be confused with the village with the same name in the municipality of Zwartewaterland, about 15 km to the southeast. Steenwijk
Steenwijk (; or ), datedly known in English as Stenwick, is a city in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland. It is the largest town of the municipality. Steenwijk received city rights in 1327. In the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) it was conquered by the Spaniards in 1581, but regained by the Dutch in 1592. Steenwijk was a separate municipality until 2001, when it merged with Brederwiede and IJsselham. The new municipality was first named "Steenwijk", but was renamed in 2003 to "Steenwijkerland". Transport Steenwijk railway station is located on the Arnhem–Leeuwarden railway, with train services operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Blokzijl
Blokzijl is a small city located southwest of Steenwijk in the province of Overijssel, the Netherlands. The city is a major tourist destination near the De Weerribben-Wieden National Park and attracts many water sports enthusiasts. Blokzijl was founded in the 1580s as a trading post for peat. After the Siege of Steenwijk (1580–81) in the Eighty Years' War, the Dutch built a fortified lock or in local dialect ''zijl'' or ''siel''. The monumental houses around the picturesque harbour were built during 17th century. Blokzijl received city rights in 1672, but was stripped of them a few years later. Until 1973, it was a separate municipality, when it became a component of the new municipality Brederwiede; it is now part of Steenwijkerland. Belt-Schutsloot
Belt-Schutsloot is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland, about 3 km north of Zwartsluis.''ANWB Topografische Atlas Nederland'', Topografische Dienst and ANWB, 2005. The village originally consisted of two parts, Belt (also called "Zandbelt") and Schutsloot, and was also called "Schutsloot en Zandbelt". Overview It was first mentioned in 1748 as "Sandbeld en Schutsloot". Belt means little height, and Schutsloot means "ditch with sluice". It started as two villages along a canal which merged into a single settlement. In 1840, Zandbelt was home to 130 people and Schutsloot 208 people. Up to 1959, Belt-Schutsloot could not be accessed by road. Baars is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality Steenwijkerland, about 4 km northwest of the town of Steenwijk. It was first mentioned in 1340 as Baersdijc, and refers to a farm named Baers which is the Dutch word for the European perch. It is a statistical entity, and has its own postal code. Kop Van Overijssel
The Kop van Overijssel (English language, English: ''Head of Overijssel'') is a region in the very northwestern part of the Netherlands, Dutch province of Overijssel. It consists of the municipality of Steenwijkerland and matches the historical region of the Land van Vollenhove. In past times it comprised a wider area, the municipalities of Kampen, Overijssel, Kampen, Zwartewaterland and Staphorst also belonging to it. The Kop van Overijssel has about 43,000 inhabitants and an area of about 322 km2, of which a tenth is water. The 'capital' is Steenwijk. Overijssel (; ; ; ) is a Provinces of the Netherlands, province of the Netherlands located in the eastern part of the country. Meppel
Meppel (; Drents: ''Möppelt'') is a city and municipality in the Northeastern Netherlands. It constitutes the southwestern part of the province of Drenthe. Meppel is the smallest municipality in Drenthe, with a total area of about . As of 1 July 2021, it had a population of 34,506 with over 30,000 inhabitants within city limits. People born in Meppel are occasionally referred to as ''Meppeler Muggen'' in Dutch; this translates as 'mosquitoes from Meppel'. The nickname comes from a traditional folk tale.
