St Cuthbert Wanderers F.C.
Saint Cuthbert Wanderers Football Club are a football club from the town of Kirkcudbright in the Stewartry in Galloway, Scotland. They play in the South of Scotland Football League. History They are named after St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, who is the patron saint of the town of Kirkcudbright. St Cuthbert Wanderers are one of the oldest clubs in the South of Scotland League. The club was formed in 1879 by several members of the congregation of St Cuthbert's Catholic Church in the High Street (which became the present St Andrew's and St Cuthbert's Church). Prior to going to Mass one Sunday morning in 1879, around seven or eight male members of the congregation talked about forming a football club. Kirkcudbright ( ; ) is a town at the mouth of the River Dee, Galloway, River Dee in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, southwest of Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie. A former royal burgh, it is the traditional county town of Kirkcudbrightshire. The South of Scotland Football League (SoSFL) is a senior football league based in south-west Scotland. The league sits at level 6 on the Scottish football league system, acting as a feeder to the Lowland Football League. Founded in 1946, it is currently composed of 11 member clubs in a single division. Geographically, the league currently covers Dumfries and Galloway although clubs have previously also been located in East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire. Cuthbert of Lindisfarne () ( – 20 March 687) was a saint of the early Northumbrian church in the Hiberno-Scottish mission, Celtic tradition. He was a monk, bishop and hermit, associated with the monastery, monasteries of Melrose Abbey#History, Melrose and Lindisfarne in the Kingdom of Northumbria, today in northern England and southern Scotland. Southern Counties League (Scotland)
The Southern Counties League was a league association football tournament for teams in southern Scotland. History Clubs in the Southern Counties Football Association, based in the south and west of Scotland, tried several times to form a league competition. The most successful of these initial attempts was 1897–98, under the presidency of W. T. Hay of Dumfries, which had seven clubs, and which played long enough to declare a champion in Newton Stewart, which earned 11 points from its 6 games; the only club which came close to playing all its fixtures was Nithsdale, which played 11 times. The organizational shambles however was such that Vale of Dryfe withdrew before the season kicked off, Thornhill before playing a match (replaced by Dumfries Hibernians), and the 6th G.R.V. quit after it had four matches postponed at late notice because of clashing cup commitments. The Scottish Football Association (; also known as the Scottish FA and the SFA) is the governing body of football in Scotland and has the ultimate responsibility for the control and development of football in Scotland.
