The Springfield Thunderbirds are a professional ice hockey team based in Springfield, Massachusetts. They are the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues. The Thunderbirds play their home games at the MassMutual Center. History In May 2016, following the relocation of the Springfield Falcons to Tucson, Arizona, after the team was sold to the Arizona Coyotes, the AHL's Portland Pirates were sold to a Springfield-based group who relocated the franchise to Springfield for the 2016–17 season. Portland Pirates
The Portland Pirates were a minor league professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL). Their home arena was the Cross Insurance Arena in downtown Portland, Maine. The franchise was previously known as the Baltimore Skipjacks from 1982 to 1993. The Pirates were affiliated with the Washington Capitals (1993–2005), the Anaheim Ducks (2005–2008), the Buffalo Sabres (2008–2011), Arizona Coyotes (2011–2015), and the Florida Panthers (2015–2016). Springfield Indians
The Springfield Indians were two separate minor professional ice hockey franchises, originally based in West Springfield, Massachusetts and later Springfield, Massachusetts. The original Indians were founding members of the American Hockey League. Combined, they were in existence for a total of 60 seasons from 1926 to 1994, with three interruptions. The Indians had two brief hiatuses from 1933 to 1935, and from 1942 to 1946. The team was known as the Syracuse Warriors from 1951 to 1954; in addition, the team was named the Springfield Kings from 1967 to 1975. Bruce Landon
Bruce Landon (born October 5, 1949) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey executive and goaltender who was the longtime part-owner, president and general manager of the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League. Playing career Following a successful junior career with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League in which he finished second in the league in goals against average in his final season, Landon was selected in the fourth round of the 1969 amateur draft by the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League. He played three seasons for their minor-league affiliate Springfield Kings, finishing ninth in the league in 1970 and leading the league to the Calder Cup finals, and backing up future Hockey Hall of Famer Billy Smith as the Kings won the AHL's Calder Cup championship in 1971. Geordie Kinnear
Geordie S. Kinnear (born July 9, 1973) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman and current head coach of the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). He played 4 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Atlanta Thrashers in the 1999–00 season. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1993 to 2001, was mainly spent in the minor American Hockey League.
