Sport plays a prominent role in the society of the Isle of Wight, an island that is part of England. Cycling The island is well known for its cycling, and it was included within Lonely Planet's ''Best in Travel Guide'' (2010) top ten cycling locations. The island also hosts events such as the Isle of Wight Randonnée and the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival each year. A popular cycling track is the Sunshine Trail which starts in Newport and ends in Sandown. Rowing There are rowing clubs at Newport, Ryde and Shanklin Sandown RC, all members of the Hants and Dorset rowing association. There is a long tradition of rowing around the island dating back to the 1880s. In May 1999 a group of local women made history by becoming the first ladies' crew to row around the island, in ten hours and twenty minutes. Commodore's Cup
The Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup is a biennial amateur team sailing regatta first held in 1992. The competition is organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club consists of a number of events held in the oceans of the Solent, the English Channel and the Isle of Wight. Each team consists of three boats, two of them rated between 1.020 and 1.230 using the IRC rating system and one boat rated above 1.150. As a Corinthian (amateur) event, the boats rated between 1.020 and 1.230 can only have one Category 3 sailor and the boat rated above 1.150 may only have two. County Cricket
Inter-county cricket matches have been played since the early 18th century, involving teams that are representative of the historic counties of England and Wales. Hampshire League
The Hampshire League was a football league in Hampshire, England. During its heyday its constitution consisted of four divisions with over 60 clubs taking part - this included a vast number of semi-professional teams and Reserve/’A’ sides of the areas professional clubs with many famous players playing in its matches over the years, often in front of large crowds. The league ran for 108 years, from 1896 until 2004 - after which two competitions have since spawned from it; the Hampshire League 2004 (an unofficial continuation) and the Hampshire Premier Football League. Ryde is an English seaside town and civil parish on the north-east coast of the Isle of Wight. The built-up area had a population of 24,096 according to the 2021 Census. Its growth as a seaside resort came after the villages of Upper Ryde and Lower Ryde were merged in the 19th century, as can still be seen in the town's central and seafront architecture. The resort's expansive sands are revealed at low tide. Smallbrook Stadium is a multi-use sports venue on the east side of the Ashey Road, south of Ryde. It currently hosts two football teams and motorcycle speedway run by Island Speedway (Iow) Limited. Football The ground hosts Ryde Saints, who play in the Isle of Wight leagues. Newport (IOW) F.C. who play in the Wessex Football League played at the stadium from 2022 until 2023 and the defunct Ryde Sports F.C. also played at the stadium. Speedway The venue was the home of the Isle of Wight Warriors, who competed in the British speedway leagues from 2009 until 2019. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit.
