Sport In Sheffield
Sheffield has a long history of involvement in sport. Although cricket was the first organised sport, it has gradually been supplanted by football. Both the main two local football teams grew out of cricket teams. Sheffield can claim many firsts in football the most famous one being Sheffield F.C. being the world's first and oldest football club. Today it has a club in every major team sport in England. Sheffield became the first UK National City of Sport in 1995 and is now home to the English Institute of Sport (EIS). Today the city is home to two league clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, top flight ice hockey ( Sheffield Steelers) and basketball (Sheffield Sharks) and a Premier League speedway team ( Sheffield Tigers). Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, England, situated south of Leeds and east of Manchester. The city is the administrative centre of the City of Sheffield. It is historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire and some of its southern suburbs were transferred from Derbyshire to the city council. Super League
Super League (also known as the Betfred Super League for sponsorship reasons, and legally Super League Europe Ltd.) is a professional rugby league competition, and the highest level of the British rugby league system, which consists of twelve teams, eleven from Northern England, the sport's heartland, and one from southern France. Super League began in 1996, replacing the Rugby Football League Championship First Division, First Division, and switching from a winter to a summer season. Sandygate is a football and cricket stadium in the Sheffield suburb of Crosspool, South Yorkshire, England. It is home to Hallam F.C. and Hallam C.C. Don Valley Stadium
Don Valley Stadium, England, was a stadium in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, completed in 1990, and hosted the 1991 World Student Games. It was named after the nearby River Don. The stadium was demolished in 2013. The stadium and facilities were also used for a variety of other events and sports. It served as a training base for the City of Sheffield Athletic Club and was the home of the Sheffield Half Marathon. It was the home ground of the Sheffield Eagles from 1991 to 2013. Rotherham United F.C. played their home matches at Don Valley between 2008 and 2012 when they were without a ground in Rotherham. Joe Simpson (mountaineer)
Joe Simpson (born 13 August 1960) is a British Mountaineering, mountaineer, author, and motivational speaker. While climbing in Peru in 1985, he suffered severe injuries and was assumed dead by his climbing companion Simon Yates (mountaineer), Simon Yates after falling into a crevasse, but he survived and managed to crawl back to his base camp.
