Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. '' Panthera leo'' (lion) and '' Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants of an ancestral taxon are grouped together (i.e. phylogenetic analysis should c ...

Spirotropis Phaeacra
''Spirotropis phaeacra'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Drilliidae. Description The shell of this micromollusc grows to a length of 4.6 mm. (Original description) The conical, angulated, tubercled shell is thin, polished, glassy, with a blunt, dun apex, a contracted base, and a longish columella. There is no longitudinal sculpture other than the fine scratch-like lines of growth. Toward the bottom of each whorl is a row of about twelve round, blunt-tipped, rather prominent tubercles, which form an angulated keel where otherwise there is no carination. There is also a slight blunt keel round the base. Its surface is covered with very obsolete, rounded, flat threads. The colour of the shell is polished glassy white, with a hyaline dun apex. The spire is high, rather narrow, and conical. Its profile-lines are little interrupted by the carinal tubercles. The protoconch consists of about two glossy, dun-coloured, globose, embryonic whorls. ...

Spirotropis Lithocolleta
''Spirotropis lithocolleta'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Drilliidae. Description The size of an adult shell varies between 10 mm and 16.5 mm. (Original description) The high, narrow, conical shell has a short base and a blunt apex. It is bluntly angulated and tubercled, thin, smooth, ivory-white. There is no longitudinal sculpture but very fine scratch-like lines of growth. Behind and parallel to the lip-edge there are three narrow sickle-shaped ribs, which are probably an accidental feature. Very slightly above the middle of the whorls runs a feeble angulation set with round but a little narrowed and obliquely elongated knobs, of which there are about 12 on each whorl. On the first regular whorl there are about 10. Before the end of the penultimate they have quite died out, and even the angulation of the whorl tends to disappear. There are faint traces of microscopic spirals over the whole shell, rather in the texture than ...

Spirotropis Laodice
''Spirotropis laodice'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Drilliidae. In 1971 McLean put this species in the genus ''Spirotropis'' Description The length of the shell attains 7.7 mm, its diameter 3.5 mm. (Original description) The small, thin, white shell contains six well-rounded whorls exclusive of the (lost) protoconch. The suture is appressed, distinct, undulated by the sculpture. The spiral sculpture is variable sometimes with well marked threads (six on the body whorl) and a finer intercalary thread in the rather wide interspaces, and sometimes with the spirals obsolete or absent. When present the suture may have a thickened edge with one thread on the preceding whorl immediately behind it, or it may be quite simple. The axial sculpture consists of (on the penultimate whorl about a dozen) short, subnodulous, slightly oblique ribs which do not cross the anal fasciole and become obsolete on the base, separated by narrower inter ...

Spirotropis Genilda
''Spirotropis genilda'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Drilliidae. Description The length of the shell attains 10.5 mm, its diameter 4.6 mm. (Original description) The small, white shell contains about six whorls exclusive of the (lost) protoconch. The suture is distinct, the whorl in front of it slightly turgid, in front of which the anal fasciole is more or less constricted. At the shoulder begin about fifteen short, very obliquely protractive, wave-like ribs, with narrower interspaces, which are conspicuous only near the periphery. The surface is otherwise smooth except for faint incremental lines. The aperture is lunate. The anal sulcus is wide and shallow. The outer lip is sharp, thin and arcuately produced in front of the sulcus. The body is polished. The columella is short, gyrate, impervious and obliquely truncate in front. The siphonal canal is very short, wide, and slightly recurved. There is no operculum on the holotyp ...
