Speedway Grand Prix Qualification
The Speedway Grand Prix Challenge or Speedway Grand Prix Qualification is an annual speedway qualifying tournament to determine the qualifiers for the Speedway Grand Prix, which is the World Championship of speedway. History From 1995 the Individual World Championship was replaced by the Grand Prix system. The 17 qualifiers for the 1995 Grand Prix were the top 10 from the 1994 World final, 5 seeds and 2 wildcards. From 1996, the leading riders from each Grand Prix series would automatically qualifying for the following year's event. The remaining places would be filled by the leading riders in the Challenge event and qualifiers from both the Continental Speedway Final and Intercontinental Final. However, the latter two finals would come to end in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Andy Smith (speedway Rider)
Andrew Smith (born 25 May 1966) is a retired motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned 29 international caps for the England national speedway team. Career Smith spent the first seven years of his career riding for the Belle Vue Aces from 1982 to 1988. He then joined Bradford Dukes for two British League seasons and began to build a reputation as one of Britain's leading riders. Smith also rode in Australia, including the 1990/91 Australian season when he based himself at Claremont Speedway in Perth, Western Australia. Despite Claremont being almost twice the length of most British tracks, on 18 January 1991 Smith defeated home town hero, and twice Australian Champion Glenn Doyle in the King of Claremont Classic. Smith also finished 2nd to Sweden's Dennis Löfqvist at the 1990 Boxing Day International at the Melbourne Showgrounds. Carl Stonehewer
Carl Bryan Stonehewer (born 16 May 1972) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned seven international caps for the England national speedway team and five caps for the Great Britain team. Career Stonehewer's principal club in Britain were Belle Vue Aces and Workington Comets. In 1997, he won the Premier League Pairs Championship partnering Martin Dixon for the Long Eaton Invaders, during the 1997 Premier League speedway season. The success was the first of five Pairs championships. He was also part of the Long Eaton four that won the Premier League Four-Team Championship, which was held on 3 August 1997, at the East of England Arena. William Gordon Hamill (born 23 May 1970) is an American international motorcycle speedway rider. He is a former Speedway World Champion, winning the title in 1996 and earned 29 caps for the United States national speedway team. Career Early career Hamill was born on 23 May 1970 in California, United States. He began junior speedway in California in 1983, eventually turning professional in 1986. In 1990, he left California to race for Cradley Heathens in the British League, joining fellow Californian and friend Greg Hancock. The 2000 Speedway Grand Prix Qualification or GP Challenge was a series of motorcycle speedway meetings used to determine the 12 riders that would qualify for the 2000 Speedway Grand Prix to join the other 10 riders that finished in the leading positions from the 1999 Speedway Grand Prix. The format changed from the previous year, in that only 2 riders would qualify straight from the Intercontinental and Continental finals and 10 riders would qualify through the GP Challenge. John Jørgensen
John Jørgensen (born 18 July 1962 in Middelfart, Denmark) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark. He earned 54 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. He is not to be confused with Johnny Jørgensen, the 1989 Danish Junior speedway champion. Career Jørgensen arrived to race in the British leagues late in the 1982 British League season after Chris Van Straaten signed him to ride for the Birmingham Brummies. After two solid seasons, Birmingham withdrew from the league and Jorgensen was signed by Coventry Bees, where he would spend most of his career. Henrik Gustafsson
Henrik Anders (Henka) Gustafsson (born 14 August 1970) is a Swedish former Motorcycle speedway rider. He won the 1993 World Pairs Championship with Tony Rickardsson and the Speedway World Team Cup in 1994 and 2000. He earned 50 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Career Gustafsson, rode for Indianerna in the Swedish Elite League starting in 1986. Gustafsson rode in the first of his four Speedway World Finals in 1990, despite failing to qualify for the 1990 World Final in Bradford, England, he got a lucky break when he replaced the injured Dane Jan O. Brian Askel Andersen (born 13 March 1971) is a Danish former international motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 12 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. Career Andersen reached the final of the Under-21 World Championship in 1990. The following year, he won the championship to become the 1991 Junior World Champion. In the final he defeatied fellow Dane Morten Andersen in a run-off for the title after both riders had finished on 14 points. Piotr Protasiewicz (born 25 January 1975 in Zielona Góra, Poland) is a Polish international speedway rider. He is a four times World team champion and earned 24 international caps for the Poland national speedway team. Career Protasiewicz began his career riding for Falubaz Zielona Góra in 1991 where he would spend four seasons. He began to record some notable performances including reaching the finals of three Speedway Under-21 World Championship in 1993, 1995 and 1996. In the 1996 final he scored a perfect 15 point maximum to be crowned the World U21 champion. The 1998 Speedway Grand Prix Qualification or GP Challenge was a series of motorcycle speedway meetings used to determine the 16 riders that qualified for the 1998 Speedway Grand Prix to join the other 8 riders that finished in the leading positions from the 1997 Speedway Grand Prix. There was a late change to the qualifying when the Grand Prix increased to 24 permanent riders. Therefore 4 riders would qualify straight from the Intercontinental and Continental finals and 9 riders would qualify through the GP Challenge (originally just 4).
