Smolensk Governorate () was an administrative-territorial unit ('' guberniya'') of the Tsardom of Russia, the Russian Empire, and the Russian SFSR. It existed, with interruptions, between 1708 and 1929. Smolensk
Smolensk is a city and the administrative center of Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located on the Dnieper River, west-southwest of Moscow. First mentioned in 863, it is one of the oldest cities in Russia. It has been a regional capital for most of the past millennium, beginning as the capital of an eponymous principality in the 11th-15th centuries, then the Smolensk Voivodeship of Lithuania and Poland, and Smolensk Governorate and Oblast within Russia. It was the main stronghold of the Smolensk Gate, a geostrategically significant pass between the Daugava and Dnieper rivers, and as such was an important point of contention in the struggle for dominance in Eastern Europe, passing at various times between Lithuania, Poland and Russia. Western Oblast
Western Oblast () was an administrative-territorial unit (''oblast'') of the Russian SFSR from 1929 to 1937. Its seat was in the city of Smolensk. The oblast was located in the west of European Russia, and its territory is currently divided between Bryansk, Kaluga, Pskov, Smolensk, and Tver Oblasts. According to the 1937 Soviet census, the population of the oblast was 4,693,495 persons. It was abolished on 27 September 1937. History The oblast was established on 1 October 1929 by the All-Russian Central Executive Committee. Kozelsk
Kozelsk () is a types of inhabited localities in Russia, town and the administrative center of Kozelsky District in Kaluga Oblast, Russia, located on the Zhizdra (river), Zhizdra River (a tributary of the Oka (river), Oka), southwest of Kaluga, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: History It was first mentioned in an 1146 chronicle as a part of Principality of Chernigov. Kozelsk became famous in the spring of 1238, when its twelve-year-old prince Vasily, son of Titus, had to defend the town against the army of Batu Khan. The latter dubbed it an "evil town" because its citizens had been fighting the attackers for seven weeks in a row, killing around four thousand enemy soldiers during the Siege of Kozelsk, siege. Peremyshl, Russia
Peremyshl () is a rural locality (a '' selo'') and the administrative center of Peremyshlsky District of Kaluga Oblast, Russia. It has a population of . History The town was mentioned in 1328, and was a capital of one of the Upper Oka Principalities. In the late 14th century it passed to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and in 1407 it passed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow. It was a fortified town in the 16th century, yet, it was sacked several times. Dorogobuzh
Dorogobuzh (; Belarusian: Дарагабуж) is a historic town and the administrative center of Dorogobuzhsky District in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, straddling the Dnieper River and located east of Smolensk, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: History First mentioned in 1150, it was established as a fortress defending eastern approaches to Smolensk. It was located in the Principality of Smolensk, which in 1404 became part of Lithuania. It passed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow after the Battle of Vedrosha in 1500. In 1508, Vasily III sent Italian masters to build a wooden fort there. Vorotynsk, Peremyshlsky District, Kaluga Oblast
Vorotynsk () is a former town located 17 km south of Kaluga in the Ugra National Park. The town is thought to have been situated slightly downstream from the confluence of the Oka and the Ugra Rivers. It was one of the Upper Oka towns and seat of the mediaeval Princes Vorotynsky. It was first mentioned in the Hypatian Codex under the year 1155. In the 14th century, it came under Lithuanian suzerainty as a fief. In 1480, Vorotynsk was the principal Tatar base during the Great standing on the Ugra river. In 1493, it passed under suzerainty of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The village of Spas-on-the-Oka, which now marks the spot, is dominated by Saviour Vorotynsk Monastery, founded by one Prince Vorotynsky in the early 16th century. Odoyev () is an Classification of inhabited localities in Russia, urban-type settlement in the west of Tula Oblast, Russia. It serves as the administrative center of Odoyevsky District. Mosalsk () is a town and the administrative center of Mosalsky District in Kaluga Oblast, Russia, located west of Kaluga, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: History First attested in 1231 as Masalsk (), it became the center of one of the Upper Oka Principalities in the 14th century.
