Sligo County Football Team
The Sligo county football team ( ) represents Sligo in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Sligo GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Connacht Senior Football Championship and the National Football League. Sligo's home ground is Markievicz Park, Sligo. The team's manager is vacant. The team last won the Connacht Senior Championship in 2007, but has never won the All-Ireland Senior Championship or the National League. According to Martin Breheny, Sligo routinely has a ranking within the bottom sixteen of county football teams. Gaelic football (; short name '')'', commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA, or football, is an Irish team sport. A form of football, it is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or palming the ball into the other team's Goal (sport), goal (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goal and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar, signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Calry–St Joseph's GAA
Calry–St Joseph's is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Calry and the northern ward of Sligo, Éire. The club was formerly known as Calry Gaels until it became Calry-St Joseph's in 1987 after a re-organisation of the GAA structures in the Sligo urban area. They have won the last 7 Sligo Senior Hurling Championships and played in 12 of the last 13 finals, winning in 2005 until 2009 and again from 2011 to 2017 (minus 2010). In 2009 they won the Connacht Junior Club Hurling Championship beating Galway side Skehana 1-09 to 0-10 in the final having lost to them the year before and they repeated that feat again in 2012 by beating the same opposition from before, Skehana. They followed up that victory with a double double by winning both Provincial and County Championships in 2013. St Farnan's is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in west County Sligo, Ireland. It was formed from the amalgamation of two local clubs, Dromore West and Templeboy in 1964. As of 2022, it was competing as a Sligo Senior Football Championship club, for the first time since the 2012 season. Naomh Molaise Gaels GAA
Naomh Molaise Gaels is a Gaelic Athletic Association club covering much of the northern area of County Sligo, comprising Cliffoney (Ahamlish) and part of the Drumcliffe/ Maugherow parishes. The club is a combination of a number of older clubs, including Grange, Cliffoney and Maugherow, and had fielded as Grange–Cliffoney before adopting the present name in 2003. Currently the champions of the Dr Taheny Cup for the minor A championship, a first-time achievement for the club. Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Seán Carrabine is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Castleconnor and at senior level for the Sligo county team. A midfielder, he scored a goal away to New York in the 2022 Connacht Senior Football Championship; Sligo won the game by four points, with Carrabine's goal worth three. St Mary's is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the western ward of Sligo, County Sligo, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. History The club was formed in 1976 from the amalgamation of the Craobh Rua and Muire Naofa clubs. St John's GAA (Sligo)
St John's is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Carraroe and the eastern ward of Sligo, Ireland. It is one of the newer clubs in the county, having been formed in 1987 after a re-organisation of the GAA structures in the Sligo urban area. The club's grounds, formerly known as Cuilbeg, have been renamed Stenson Park in memory of former Sligo player and Curry/St John's club man Johnny Stenson, and were formally opened in October 2012 by GAA President Liam O'Neill. In 2013, St John's seniors won ten games out of a possible eleven and contested the Division One League final for the very first time in their short history against Tourlestrane but lost.
