Shumagin Islands
The Shumagin Islands ( Unangan: ''Qagiiĝun''; ) are a group of 20 islands in the Aleutians East Borough south of the mainland of Alaska, United States, at 54°54'–55°20' North 159°15'–160°45' West. The largest islands are Unga Island, Popof Island, Korovin Island, and Nagai Island. Other islands include Andronica, Big Koniuji, Little Koniuji, Simeonof, Chernabura, and Bird. The total land area is 1,192.369 km2 (460.376 sq mi) and their total population as of the 2020 census was 578 persons, almost entirely in the city of Sand Point, on Popof Island. Aleut ( ) or is the language spoken by the Aleut living in the Aleutian Islands, Pribilof Islands, Commander Islands, and the Alaska Peninsula (in Aleut , the origin of the state name Alaska). Aleut is the sole language in the Aleut branch of the Eskimo–Aleut languages, Eskimo–Aleut language family. Aleutians East Borough, Alaska
Aleutians East Borough () is a 2nd class borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2020 census the borough's population was 3,420. The borough seat is Sand Point. History According to archaeological evidence, the area has been inhabited by the Aleuts since the last ice age. Early contact was with Russian fur traders who sought sea otters in these islands. Whaling, fishing and cannery operations brought an influx of Scandinavian and European fishermen in the early 1900s. During World War II, the area was a strategic military site for the Aleutian Campaign, and many locals were evacuated to Ketchikan. Unga Island
Unga Island (Uĝnaasaqax̂ in Aleut language, Aleut) is the largest of the Shumagin Islands off the Alaska Peninsula in southwestern Alaska, United States. The island has a land area of 170.73 sq mi (442.188 km2), making it the List of islands of the United States by area, 36th largest island in the United States. As of the United States Census, 2000, 2000 census, it had a permanent population of one. Popof Island
Popof Island (Siitikdax̂ in Aleut language, Aleut) is an island in the Shumagin Islands south of mainland Alaska. The largest community in the area, Sand Point, Alaska, Sand Point, is located on the northwest coast. Popof Island is long, wide and the peak elevation is . It is located at . Korovin Island
Korovin Island (''Tanĝanuk'' in Aleut) is one of the Shumagin Islands in the Gulf of Alaska south of the Alaska Peninsula in the Aleutians East Borough of Alaska, United States. The island lies northeast of Popof Island and across the Unga Strait from the mainland peninsula. To its southeast are Andronica Island, and further southeast, Nagai Island. Korovin island has a land area of 67.85 km2 (26.197 sq mi) and is uninhabited by humans. Korovin Island was named by the Russians, presumably after Ivan Korovin, an early Russian explorer who explored the Aleutian Islands in 1762. The word is from the Russian ''Koróva'' ("cow").
