Shooting Sports In India
Shooting is an important Olympic sport in India. Of India's 41 Olympic medals, seven have come from shooting, including a gold by Abhinav Bindra in the 2008 Olympics. Indian shooters who have excelled at international events include Abhinav Bindra, Jaspal Rana, Jitu Rai, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Vijay Kumar, Gagan Narang, Apurvi Chandela, Ronjan Sodhi, Anjali Bhagwat, Heena Sidhu, Shreyasi Singh, Manu Bhaker, Avani Lekhara, Mona Agarwal, Anisa Sayyed, Rahi Sarnobat, Anantjeet Singh Naruka, and Saurabh Chaudhary. National Rifle Association Of India
The National Rifle Association of India was founded on 17 April, 1951 with a view to promote and popularize the shooting sports in India as well as for self-defense teaching purposes. The NRAI arranges national-level shooting competitions and the trials that determine which athletes will represent the country in international events. It is also responsible for identifying and nurturing talented shooters who compete in significant global competitions like the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games. The first speaker of Lok Sabha, Sh. G.V. Mavlankar founded the NRAI and served as its inaugural president. He was succeeded by Sh. Govind Vallabh Pant, Sh. Lal Bahadur Shastri, Sh. Y. B. Chauhan, Sh. G.S. Dhillon, and Sh. Joginder Singh. In 2010, Raninder Singh took over the presidency. In 2024, Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo became the new president after winning majority votes. Avani Lekhara
Avani Lekhara (born 8 November 2001) is an Indian Paralympic rifle shooter and disability rights advocate. She is the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games and the first Indian athlete to win multiple medals in a single edition of the Paralympics. Competing in the SH1 classification, Lekhara made history at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics by securing gold in the women's 10m air rifle standing event and bronze in the 50m rifle 3 positions. Joydeep Karmakar (; born 7 September 1979) is an Indian shooting sports, sports shooter from Kolkata, West Bengal. Starting his sports career in 1989, he represented India in rifle prone events in various championships. He became a Junior National Champion in his first Nationals in 1994. Shimon Sharif (born 7 February 1978) is an Indian sport shooter. He started his sports career in 1995. He has participated in several international shooting competitions including the ISSF World Cup at Korea in 2003. He has won multiple medals for Delhi at various National Games of India. In 2007, he became the first Indian to compete in the 10 meter running target event. Saurabh Chaudhary (born 12 May 2002) is an Indian sport shooter who specializes in the 10 metre air pistol event. He rose to fame after clinching the gold medal in the 10 m air pistol event at the 2018 Asian Games, becoming the youngest Indian ever to win an Asian Games gold at just 16 years old. Anantjeet Singh Naruka
Anantjeet Singh Naruka (born 1 July 1998) is an Indian skeet shooter. He is a bronze medalist at the World Cup, and a silver and bronze medalist at the Asian Games. He is a double gold medalist, as well as silver and bronze medalist at the Asian Championships. Naruka finished 4th in the mixed skeet event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, losing the bronze medal by a point, with a scoreline of 43–44.
