Shipley, West Sussex
Shipley is a village and civil parish in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. It lies just off the A272 road north-east of Storrington. The parish includes the village of Coolham and the hamlets of Dragon's Green, Brooks Green and Broomer's Corner. History Shipley is first mentioned in a charter of 1073 as ''Scapeleia'', and in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ''Sepelei''. The name derives from the Old English ''scēap'' ('sheep') and ''lēah'' ('open ground, such as meadow, pasture, or arable land'). Thus it means 'sheep-clearing' or 'sheep-pasture'. Shipley & Halmos is designed by Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos, two of the original founders of Trovata. Shipley Do-Nuts (colloquially known as Shipley's) is an American doughnut company and coffeehouse chain with more than 300 franchised stores in the Southern United States, including Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and Colorado. Its headquarters are located in Northside, Houston, Texas. History Shipley Do-Nuts began in 1936 by Lawrence Shipley. When Shipley first created his recipe, his doughnuts were cut by hand, served warm during the day, and sold for per dozen. The Shipley School is an independent pre-K12 college preparatory school in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, United States, approximately 10 miles west-northwest of Philadelphia. History Hannah Shipley, Elizabeth Shipley, and Katharine Shipley, all sisters, founded The Shipley School in 1888 as a preparatory school for Bryn Mawr College, a women's college located directly across the street. The Shipley sisters were strong-willed, highly educated Quaker women who created the school to pass on their values to similarly minded young women. The school opened in the fall of 1894 with six students and nine faculty members. By the 1940s, Shipley had expanded the student body to 341 students. At this time, about half of all Upper School students were boarders hailing from all over the country and from Europe, Asia, Russia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Shipley Gordon Stuart Erskine, 14th Earl of Buchan, (27 February 1850 – 16 April 1934), styled Lord Cardross from 1857 until 1898, was a Scottish nobleman and racehorse owner. Biography Cardross was the eldest son of David Stuart Erskine, 13th Earl of Buchan and Agnes Graham Smith, daughter of James Smith, of Craigend Castle, Stirlingshire.Burke's Peerage (repr. 2003). Vol. 1. p. 567. He was named after his great-grandfather, Maj.-Gen. Sir Charles Shipley. He was educated at Harrow. Buchan was Conservative in politics but spent most of his life involved in equestrian and leisurely pursuits. He was thoroughly involved with the turf, owning several notable racehorses, and spent much time at Newmarket. While there he resided at his Exning estate. Eglingham is a village in Northumberland, England, situated about north-west of Alnwick and from Wooler. It lies in the sheltered valley of the Eglingham Burn, a tributary of the River Aln, about above sea level, in a rural conservation area set amongst rolling countryside, within of the Cheviot Hills.
