Seychelles Coast Guard
The Seychelles Coast Guard (SCG) is a branch of the Seychelles People's Defence Force created in 1993. It is a maritime, military, multi-mission service. They acquired responsibility for search and rescue for vessel incidents as well as environmental protection from the Seychelles Port Authority, formerly known as the Port and Marine Services Division. Although Seychelles is a small country, it is located off the Horn of Africa, strategically close to the operation of notorious pirates. Sri Lanka, China, United Arab Emirates and India have made strategic donations of patrol vessels to the Seychelles. The action of 30 March 2010 was a naval battle involving a patrol boat of the Seychelles Coast Guard and two groups of Piracy in Somalia, Somali pirate vessels. The encounter resulted in the freeing of twenty-seven hostages held by the pirates. ''La Flèche'' (P32) is a patrol vessel owned and operated by the Seychelles Coast Guard. ''La Flèche'' was donated to Seychelles by the United Arab Emirates, with a sister ship, on April 1, 2011. Although the Seychelles are a small country, it is located off the Horn of Africa, strategically close to the operation of active pirates. Other Indian Ocean nations see their donations of patrol vessels to Seychelles as a strategic investment in fighting piracy. Type 062 Gunboat
The Type 062 gunboat is a class of gunboat of the People's Liberation Army Navy first developed and constructed in the 1950s. This unsophisticated class is relatively well-armed for its size and is the most widely built and exported Chinese naval vessel in terms of numbers. A total of 30 were built, initial boats being known as the Shanghai I class and later slightly improved boats being known as the Shanghai II class. The Shanghai I class was slightly smaller than its successor, the Shanghai II class, displacing 125 tons instead of 135 tons, and had a twin Chinese Type 66 57 mm gun mount forward.
