Antonio Muñoz (Spanish Politician)
Antonio Muñoz Martínez (born 29 October 1959) is a Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) politician. He has been a city councillor in Seville since 2011 and the city's mayor since 2022. Biography Born in La Rinconada, Province of Seville, Muñoz relocated to Barcelona at the age of 3 due to his father's construction work. His father was then transferred back to Andalusia, taking the family to Fuengirola; he had a brief time back in La Rinconada due to his mother's illness. He graduated in Economic and Business Sciences from the University of Málaga, where he began to affiliate with left-wing politics, joining the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in 1983. He was elected the same year to the city council in La Rinconada, where he remained for eight years. Muñoz gained a Master of Business Administration degree from the San Telmo Business School, also in Málaga, and became director general of Tourism Planning for the Regional Government of Andalusia. The Archivo General de Indias (, "General Archive of the Indies"), housed in the ancient merchants' exchange of Seville, Spain, the ''Casa Lonja de Mercaderes'', is the repository of extremely valuable archival documents illustrating the history of the Spanish Empire in the Americas and Asia. The building itself, an unusually serene and Italianate example of Spanish Renaissance architecture, was designed by Juan de Herrera. This structure and its contents were registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site together with the adjoining Seville Cathedral and the Alcázar of Seville. Structure The origin of the structure dates to 1572 when Philip II commissioned the building from Juan de Herrera, the architect of the Escorial to house the Consulado de mercaderes of Seville. A World Heritage Site is a landmark or area with legal protection by an international convention administered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). World Heritage Sites are designated by UNESCO for having cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance.
