This is a list of currently active separatist movements in North America. Separatism includes autonomism and secessionism. Criteria What is and is not considered an autonomist or secessionist movement is sometimes contentious. Entries on this list must meet three criteria: # They are active movements with active members. # They are seeking greater autonomy or self-determination for a geographic region (as opposed to personal autonomy). # They are citizens / people of the conflict area and do not come from another country. Autonomism (political Doctrine)
Autonomism is a political doctrine which supports acquiring or preserving political autonomy of a nation or a region. It is not necessarily opposed to federalism, and souverainism necessarily implies autonomism, but not vice versa. Examples of autonomist parties include Union Nationale, Action démocratique du Québec and its successor Coalition Avenir Québec (Quebec) and recent (2018) Freedom Conservative Party of Alberta (Alberta) in Canada, New Macau Association in China (Macau), Parti progressiste martiniquais (Martinique) in France, in Italy (Northern Italy) and Popular Democratic Party in the United States (Puerto Rico). Federalism In Antigua And Barbuda
Federalism in Antigua and Barbuda refers to political theories that the central government of Antigua and Barbuda should share a certain degree of sovereignty with its parishes and dependencies under a form of federalism. These proposals were first made during the era of the Associated State of Antigua, prior to independence. However, due to disputes during the Barbuda Land crisis since 2017, members of the Barbuda People's Movement, the United Progressive Party, and other entities have proposed this in an effort to avoid Barbudan secession. In Antigua and Barbuda, the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis is usually used as an example of how an Antiguan and Barbudan federal system could work. Maverick Party
The Maverick Party, formerly known as Wexit Canada, is a defunct Canadian federal political party. It advocated for constitutional changes to benefit, or the independence of, Western Canada, which includes British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The party had its roots in Alberta separatism and advocates the use of grassroots politics. The party ran candidates across the aforementioned provinces and three territories in the 2021 Canadian federal election, but did not run candidates in ridings where there was a strong possibility of electing a Liberal or New Democratic candidate. The party was led by former Conservative Party of Canada House leader Jay Hill since the resignation of the party's first leader, Peter Downing. Nunavut
Nunavut is the largest and northernmost Provinces and territories of Canada#Territories, territory of Canada. It was separated officially from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, via the ''Nunavut Act'' and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, ''Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act'', which provided this territory to the Inuit for self-government. Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories is a federal Provinces and territories of Canada, territory of Canada.
