Sennar (state)
Sennar ( ') is one of the 18 States of Sudan, wilayat or states of Sudan. It has an area of and had a population of approximately 1,918,692 in 2018. History ;2023–present Sudanese civil war Ever since the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces, RSF took control of most of the state of Gezira State. It has launched small but not threatening incursions into North Sennar. In June 2024, the RSF launched an Sennar offensive, offensive against the SAF in the state. The force started by attacking Jebel Moya, a key area controlling a main road, and stormed to take control of the capital, Sinja. It took control of other cities such as Dinder, Sudan, Dinder, Mazmoum, and El-Suki and nearby areas connecting it while launching an incursion into Blue Nile state. However in October, the Sudanese military attacked and took control of Jebel Moya. The key area of Jebel Moya being lost led to the RSF losing control of Dinder, El Suki and other areas in Sennar. Below is a list of the 18 states of the Sudan (Arabic names are in parentheses). Prior to 9 July 2011, the Republic of the Sudan was composed of 25 states. The ten southern states now form part of the independent country of South Sudan. Two additional states were created in 2012 within the Darfur region, and one in 2013 in Kordofan, bringing the total to 18. Dinder National Park
Dinder National Park is a national park and biosphere reserve in eastern Sudan, and is connected to Ethiopia's Alitash National Park. Location Dinder lies approximately southeast of Khartoum, on either side of the Dinder River bounded to the north by the Rahad River. The town of Dinder ( northwest) acts as a gateway for tourists wishing to enter the Park. History The area of Dinder was heavily populated when it was first visited by Europeans in 1861. In the 1880s, at the time of the Mahdist War and a famine, the human population vanished. Alfred Harrison found only traces of human habitation in 1925. Dinder was established as a park in 1935 following the London Convention of 1933 and designated in 1979 as a member of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. For several centuries it was the capital of the Funj Kingdom of Sennar and until at least 2011, Sennar was the capital of Sennar State. History The area was under Kushite & Meroitic rule from 750 BC to around 350 AD. The area came under Alwan rule, after which the Alwans were overthrown by the Funj who made Sennar their capital. Overview The French traveler Charles-Jacques Poncet, who visited Sennar near the end of the 17th century, estimated the town had a population of 100,000 inhabitants. However, when the Dutch explorer Juan Maria Schuver travelled through the town in April 1881, he doubted it had "anything like 100,000 inhabitants, when Khartoum, the centre and capital of a tenfold larger country is not able to muster more than a quarter of that number, if we exclude the garrison."
