Scunthorpe () is an industrial town in Lincolnshire, England, and the county's third most populous settlement after Lincoln, England, Lincoln and Grimsby, with a population of 81,286 in 2021. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement of the North Lincolnshire district. Scunthorpe lies north of Lincoln and is between Grimsby to the east and Doncaster to the west, while Kingston upon Hull, Hull is to the north-east via the Humber Bridge. Etymology The town appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as , which is from the Old Norse language, Old Norse meaning "Skuma's homestead", a site which is believed to be in the town centre, close to Market Hill. Today Skuma’s homestead means ‘A secondary settlement, a dependent outlying farmstead or hamlet’. Scunthorpe Steelworks
Scunthorpe Steelworks is a steel mill with blast furnaces in North Lincolnshire, England. As of April 2025, the facility employs around 2,700 people. It is the last plant in the UK capable of producing virgin steel, which is used in major construction projects like new buildings and railways. The rest of the UK's steel industry produces recycled steel using electric arc furnaces. The iron and steel industry in Scunthorpe was established in the mid-19th century, following the discovery and exploitation of middle Lias ironstone, east of Scunthorpe (Lincolnshire). Initially, iron ore was exported to iron producers in South Yorkshire. Later, after the construction of the Trent, Ancholme and Grimsby Railway (1860s) gave rail access to the area, local iron production rapidly expanded, using local ironstone and imported coal or Coke (fuel), coke. Brumby, Lincolnshire
Frodingham is a historic hamlet and now a suburb of Scunthorpe in the borough of North Lincolnshire, in Lincolnshire, England. The village lay directly to the south of Scunthorpe town centre, the name Frodingham is now often used to refer to the area directly to the north of the town centre. Frodingham parish originally included the townships of Frodingham, Scunthorpe, Brumby, Crosby (part) and Gunness (part). The townships became civil parishes in 1866. In 1894 Brumby & Frodingham Urban District Council (UDC) was formed, separate from neighbouring Scunthorpe UDC. Brumby & Frodingham UDC was amalgamated with Scunthorpe in 1919. St Lawrence's church was the centre of the original hamlet of Frodingham. The Pods
The Pods is a leisure centre in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, England. The leisure centre offers a wide range of modern facilities, including two swimming pools, a gym, a café and a Sports Hall. The leisure centre is located in the town's Central Park near Ashby Road. The Pods is reported to be built the highest environmental standards and is aiming for a ‘excellent' BREAAM environmental rating. It has grey water recycling, a bio-mass boiler, and the roof is partly covered with the sedum plants. Hexagonal panels and panes of glass have been used to create the building's dome shaped roofs, which is of a similar style to Cornwall's Eden Project. Ashby is a suburb of Scunthorpe, in the North Lincolnshire district, in the ceremonial county of Lincolnshire, England. Bottesford is a town in North Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire, England. Historically a village, Bottesford forms a contiguous urban area of Scunthorpe. Crosby was a small hamlet which has grown into a suburb in the north of Scunthorpe, in the North Lincolnshire district, in the ceremonial county of Lincolnshire, England. Remnants of the old hamlet can be found in Old Crosby. The Anglican Parish Church is St George's Church, Crosby. Located on the corner of Digby Street and Frodingham Road, it was designed by the architect H.C. Corlette. Construction of the church began in 1924 and the building was consecrated in 1926. Its former clergy includes (John Harvard) Christopher Laurence who was Archdeacon Of Lindsey from 1985 to 1994. The Crosby Angel War Memorial is located on the corner of Frodingham Road and Sheffield Street West in the grounds of the former Crosby Primary School.
