Saturniinae
The Saturniinae or saturniines are a subfamily of the family Saturniidae, also known as giant silkmoths. They are commonly known as emperor moths or wild silk moths. They are easily spotted by the eyespots on the upper surface of their wings. Some exhibit realistic eye-like markings, whilst others have adapted the eyespots to form crescent moon or angular shapes or have lost their wing scales to create transparent windows. They are medium to very large moths, with adult wingspans ranging from 7.5 to 15 cm, in some cases even more. They consist of some of the largest sized Lepidoptera, such as the luna moth, atlas moth, and many more. The Saturniinae is an important source of wild silk and human food in many different cultures. The saturniine genera, approximately 169 in number, are divided into four major and one minor ( Micragonini) tribes. The genus '' Adafroptilum'' presently consists of a group of species with undetermined relationships. Adults in the Saturniinae typ ...

Saturniidae
Saturniidae, members of which are commonly named the saturniids, is a family of Lepidoptera with an estimated 2,300 described species. The family contains some of the largest species of moths in the world. Notable members include the emperor moths, royal moths, and giant silk moths (or wild silk moths). Adults are characterized by large, lobed wings, heavy bodies covered in hair-like scales, and reduced mouthparts. They lack a frenulum, but the hindwings overlap the forewings to produce the effect of an unbroken wing surface. Saturniids are sometimes brightly colored and often have translucent eyespots or "windows" on their wings. Sexual dimorphism varies by species, but males can generally be distinguished by their larger, broader antennae. Most adults have wingspans between , but some tropical species such as the Atlas moth (''Attacus atlas'') may have wingspans up to . Together with certain Noctuidae, Saturniidae contains the largest Lepidoptera and some of the larges ...

Luna Moth
The luna moth (''Actias luna''), also called the American moon moth, is a Nearctic moth in the family Saturniidae, subfamily Saturniinae, a group commonly named the giant silk moths. The moth has lime-green wings and a white body. Its caterpillars are also green. Its typical wingspan is roughly , but wingspans can exceed , ranking the species as one of the larger moths in North America. Across Canada, it has one generation per year, with the winged adults appearing in late May or early June, whereas farther south it will have two or even three generations per year, the first appearance as early as March in southern parts of the United States. As defense mechanisms, larvae emit clicks as a warning and can also regurgitate intestinal contents, confirmed as having a deterrent effect on a variety of predators. The elongated tails of the hindwings are thought to confuse the echolocation detection used by predatory bats. A parasitoid fly deliberately introduced to North A ...

Eupackardia
''Eupackardia'' is a monotypic moth genus in the family Saturniidae erected by Theodore Dru Alison Cockerell in 1912. Its only species, ''Eupackardia calleta'', the calleta silkmoth, was described by John O. Westwood in 1853. It is found in Mexico, Guatemala, as well as in the states such as; Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The wingspan is normally , however, some specimens have been reported to exceed 5 inches. The larvae mainly feed on ''Fraxinus'' species, ''Leucophyllum frutescens'', ''Sapium biloculare'' and ''Fouquieria splendens''. Description The adult calleta silkmoth has a black body with a red collar and red on the back of the thorax. The wings, which normally span 8-11 centimetres, are black with conspicuous white post-median lines which happen to be wider in females. They can also have large triangular white spots on their wings however, some may not. Caterpillars or larvae are normally bright green in colour with white stripes as well as have black scoli sets ...
