Sarothrura
Flufftails (genus ''Sarothrura'') are small birds related to Rallidae, rails and Heliornithidae, finfoots. There are nine species, seven of which are distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, with the remaining two in Madagascar. The genus was long placed with the rail family Rallidae, but is now placed in the family Sarothruridae, along with three other species of wood rails (genus ''Canirallus''). Description The group's common name is derived from the short tail which has degraded fluffy feathers. All species except the white-winged flufftail display sexual dimorphism in their plumage but not their size. The bodies of males are mostly black, with each species having a characteristic pattern of white spots or streaks. The heads of males are chestnut-colored. Female plumage is predominantly black or brown, paired with the same characteristic patterns. There are some exceptions, however, such as the white-spotted females that also carry the chestnut coloration of their males. Diet ...

Sarothruridae
Sarothruridae is a family of small- to medium-sized ground-living birds found mostly in Madagascar and sub-Saharan Africa, with the genus ''Rallicula'' being restricted to New Guinea and the Moluccas. The species in this family were once considered to sit with the larger rail family Rallidae. These birds are highly similar to small plump Rallidae at a casual glance, and typically plumaged brown-and-black with lighter (white or beige) pattern. However, their eggs are pure white, lacking the spotting of Rallidae eggs. Except for ''Mentocrex'', they have pronounced sexual dimorphism, while in Rallidae the sexes generally cannot be distinguished in the field. Sarothruridae males differ from females in basic coloration to a varying extent, and their wings and sometimes bellies are typically unpatterned, speckled, or adorned with lengthwise streaks; females, by contrast, have a barred pattern, in some species consisting of distinct spots arranged in vertical rows. Also, Rallidae have sq ...

White-winged Flufftail
The white-winged flufftail (''Sarothrura ayresi'') is a very rare African bird in the family Sarothruridae. The estimated global population size of white-winged flufftails is less than 250 adults. These birds reside in Ethiopia and South Africa but it is unknown whether these populations are one large or two different populations. Both sexes have dull plumage, dark crowns, and when flying show white secondary feathers. Their habitat consists of high altitude seasonal marshland with high sedge cover to protect their ground nests. Habitat loss is the main problem facing these birds as they require highly specialized habitat. These marshlands are being destroyed for a number of reasons such as, farming, grazing and sedge harvesting, but some efforts are being taken to protect the white-winged flufftail. Description Its scientific name honours South African ornithologist Thomas Ayres, who discovered it at Potchefstroom. The once extensive Potchefstroom marshes have since been reduc ...

Madagascar flufftails are found in Madagascar however, they are limited in the wet areas in the north and lacking from Lake Sahaka in the northeast. Its natural habitat is subtropical, tropical moist lowland forests, shrubland, grassland, and artificial areas. This is where they find their food which consists of insects and seeds. Madagascar Flufftails have a stable population of around 6,700-67,000. The species does not meet the criteria for vulnerability, therefore, it is marked as Least Concern. Characteristics The Madagascar flufftail is small in size with a length of around 14cm and a weight of 30g.
