Sandys Parish
Sandys Parish ( "sands") is one of the nine parishes of Bermuda. It is named for English aristocrat Sir Edwin Sandys (1561–1629), and hence there is no apostrophe in the name. It is located in the south west of the island chain, occupying the three islands of Ireland Island, Boaz Island, and the larger Somerset Island, as well as a small part of the main island of Bermuda. These islands make up the western coast of the Great Sound, the large expanse of water which dominates the geography of western Bermuda, where it is joined to Southampton parish. Like most other parishes in Bermuda, it covers 2.3 square miles (about 6.0 km2 or 1500 acres). It had a population of 6,983 in 2016. Natural features in Sandys include Ely's Harbor, the Cathedral Rocks, Daniel's Head, and Mangrove Bay. Kim Wilson (politician)
Kim Wilson is a Bermudian politician and lawyer, who is Minister of Health for the Government of Bermuda. Elected to parliament in 2012, Wilson has held several ministries, as a member of the Progressive Labour Party. Career Wilson studied for a BSc in Psychology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She then moved to further study, first at Indiana University Bloomington for a M.Ed in Counselling, followed by an LLB (Hons) from the School of Oriental and African Studies. She was called to the Bermuda Bar in 1995. Her political career began in October 2006 when she was appointed as a Government Senator in the Upper House and as Junior Minister of Finance and Education. She was subsequently appointed Attorney-General and Minister of Justice in December 2007. In 2010 she was the first person to be appointed Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda
HMD Bermuda ( Her/His Majesty's Dockyard, Bermuda) was the principal base of the Royal Navy in the Western Atlantic between American independence and the Cold War. The Imperial fortress colony of Bermuda had occupied a useful position astride the homeward leg taken by many European vessels from the New World since before its settlement by England in 1609. French privateers may have used the islands as a staging place for operations against Spanish galleons in the 16th century. Somerset Bridge, Bermuda
Somerset Bridge is a small bridge in Bermuda connecting Somerset Island, Bermuda, Somerset Island with the mainland in the western parish of Sandys Parish, Bermuda, Sandys, Somerset Bridge is reputedly the smallest working drawbridge in the world. It crosses a small channel connecting the Great Sound, Bermuda, Great Sound with Ely's Harbour, Bermuda, Ely's Harbour. Mangrove Bay, Bermuda
A mangrove is a shrub or tree that grows mainly in coastal saline or brackish water. Mangroves grow in an equatorial climate, typically along coastlines and tidal rivers. They have particular adaptations to take in extra oxygen and remove salt, allowing them to tolerate conditions that kill most plants. The term is also used for tropical coastal vegetation consisting of such species. Mangroves are taxonomically diverse due to convergent evolution in several plant families. They occur worldwide in the tropics and subtropics and even some temperate coastal areas, mainly between latitudes 30° N and 30° S, with the greatest mangrove area within 5° of the equator. Mangrove plant families first appeared during the Late Cretaceous to Paleocene epochs and became widely distributed in part due to the movement of tectonic plates. Daniel's Head, Bermuda
Daniel's, opened in late 1975, was one of the first lesbian bars in Spain and one of the first LGBT bars in Barcelona. Opened by María del Carmen Tobar, it originally was a bar and billiards room but expanded to have a dance hall. The bar attracted women from a wide variety of backgrounds including non-lesbian women. In the early years of the Spanish transition to democracy, Spanish democratic transition the bar was accepted because its owner was well connected in the local government through Daniela her band-mate. The police still occasionally raided the bar, however, during its early years. Tobar played an active role in making Daniel's the center of lesbian life in Barcelona, sponsoring sports teams and a theater group. The bar also sold feminist literature, including the magazine call Red de Amazonas.
