Sambalpur () is the fifth largest city in the Indian State of Odisha. It is located on the banks of river Mahanadi, with a population of 335,761 (as per 2011 census). Prehistoric settlements have been recorded there. It is the home of the Sambalpuri sari. Overview The city contains many temples, historic buildings and parks. Sambalpuri Sari
A Sambalpuri sari is a traditional handwoven ''bandha'' (Odisha Ikat, ikat) sari (locally called ''"sambalpuri bandha"'' sadhi or saree) wherein the warp and the weft are tie-dyed before weaving. It is a handloom sari produced in the Sambalpur district, Sambalpur, Bargarh district, Bargarh, Balangir district, Balangir, Boudh district, Boudh and Sonepur district, Sonepur districts of Odisha, India. Sambalpuri saris incorporate traditional motifs like shankha (Conch), chakra (wheel), phula (flower), all of which have deep symbolism with the native Odia culture. The colours red, black and white represents Lord Kaalia Jagannath, (Jagannatha)'s face colour. The East Coast Railway (abbreviated as ECoR) is one of the 19 railway zones of Indian Railways. It came into existence on 01-April-2003. It headquarters are located at . History Consequent upon the parliament's approval, East Coast Railway was the first of the seven new zones to be inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India H. D. Deve Gowda on 8 August 1996. Hirakud Dam
Hirakud Dam is built across the Mahanadi River, about from Sambalpur in the state of Odisha in India. It is the longest Embankment dam, earthen dam in the world. Behind the dam extends a long lake, Hirakud Reservoir. It is one of the first major multipurpose river valley projects started after Indian independence movement, India's independence. Hirakud Reservoir was declared a Ramsar site on 12 October 2021. Construction history On 15 March 1946, Sir Hawthorne Lewis, the Governor of Odisha, laid the foundation stone of the Hirakud Dam.
