Saffron Walden Town Football Club is a football club based in Saffron Walden, Essex, England. They are currently members of the and play at Catons Lane. History The club was established as Saffron Walden in 1872 and are the oldest senior football club in Essex. They entered the FA Cup in 1876–77, but withdrew after being drawn against holders Wanderers as they could not afford to travel. Two years later they made their first appearance, losing 5–0 to Upton Park in the first round. In 1882 the club were founder members of the Essex County Football Association. In 1890 club secretary Arthur Smith, the headmaster of the local Boy's National School, negotiated an annual fee of £3 with Lord Braybrooke for the use of a piece of land in Loft's Lane; previously the club had played on the town common, but had been unable to charge spectators an entrance fee. Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden is a market town and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England, north of Bishop's Stortford, south of Cambridge and north of London. It retains a rural appearance and some buildings of the medieval period. The population was 15,504 at the 2011 census and 16,613 in the 2021 census. History Archaeological evidence suggests continuous settlement on or near the site of Saffron Walden from at least the Neolithic British Isles, Neolithic period. It is believed that a small Romano-British culture, Romano-British settlement and fort – possibly in the area round Abbey Lane – existed as an outpost of the much larger settlement of Great Chesterford, Cestreforda to the north. After the Norman conquest of England, Norman invasion of 1066, a stone church was built. Walden Castle, dating from about 1140, may have been built on pre-existing fortifications. Essex Senior Football League
The Essex Senior Football League is an English men's football league. It contains clubs from the Essex FA, Hertfordshire FA, London FA, Middlesex FA and the Amateur Football Alliance. It is a feeder league to Division One North of the Isthmian League and has a single division which sits at Step 5 (or Level 9) of the National League System. Founder members The Essex Senior League was formed in 1971 with nine founder members. Martin Stanford Peters (8 November 1943 – 21 December 2019) was an English Association football, footballer and manager. Witham () is a town and civil parish in the Braintree district, in the county of Essex, England. In the 2011 census, it had a population of 25,353. It is twinned with the town of Waldbröl, Germany. The 2019–20 season was the 49th in the history of Essex Senior Football League, a football competition in England. The provisional club allocations for steps 5 and 6 were announced by the FA on 19 May 2019. The constitution was ratified by the league at its AGM. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, and in line with directives from The FA, the Essex Senior League issued a statement on 16 March confirming the postponement of forthcoming matches. The 2017–18 season was the 75th in the history of Eastern Counties Football League, a football competition in England. It was also the last season to have a single division at Step 6. The constitution for Step 5 and Step 6 divisions for 2017–18 was announced on 26 May 2017, and the Eastern Counties divisions constitutions were ratified at the league's AGM on 17 June 2017.
