SX Phoenicis Variables
An SX Phoenicis variable is a type of variable star. These stars exhibit a short period pulsation behavior that varies on time scales of 0.03–0.08 days (0.7–1.9 hours). They have spectral classifications in the range A2-F5 and vary in magnitude by up to 0.7. Compared to the Sun, these stars have a lower metallicity, which means they have a reduced abundance of elements other than hydrogen and helium. They also have relatively high space velocity and low luminosities for stars of their stellar classification. These properties distinguish the SX Phoenicis variables from their cousins, the Delta Scuti variables. The latter have longer periods, higher metallicity and large amplitudes. SX Phoenicis variables are found primarily in globular clusters and galactic halos. The variability cycle has a period-luminosity relation. Blue Straggler
A blue straggler is a type of star that is more luminous and bluer than expected. Typically identified in a stellar cluster, they have a higher effective temperature than the main sequence turnoff point for the cluster, where ordinary stars begin to evolve towards the red giant branch. Blue stragglers were first discovered by Allan Sandage in 1953 while performing photometry of the stars in the globular cluster M3. American Association Of Variable Star Observers
The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) is an international nonprofit organization. Founded in 1911, the organization focuses on coordinating, analyzing, publishing, and archiving variable star observations made largely by amateur astronomers. The AAVSO creates records that establish light curves depicting the variation in brightness of a star over time. The AAVSO makes these records available to professional astronomers, researchers, and educators. Professional astronomers do not have the resources to monitor every variable star. Hence, astronomy is one of the few sciences where amateurs can make significant contributions to research. In 2011, the 100th year of the AAVSO's existence, the twenty-millionth variable star observation was received into their database. General Catalogue Of Variable Stars
The General Catalogue of Variable Stars (GCVS) is a list of variable stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. Its first edition, containing 10,820 stars, was published in 1948 by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, edited by and Pavel Parenago. Second and third editions were published in 1958 and 1968. The fourth edition, containing 28,435 stars, was published in three volumes in 1985–1987. Later, two more volumes were published: the fourth volume containing reference tables and the fifth volume containing extragalactic variable stars. AE Ursae Majoris
AE Ursae Majoris is a star in the northern circumpolar constellation of Ursa Major, abbreviated AE UMa. It is a variable star that ranges in brightness from a peak apparent visual magnitude of 10.86 down to 11.52. The distance to this star is approximately 2,400 light years based on parallax measurements. The variability of this star was announced by E. Geyer and associates in 1955. V. P. Tsesevich in 1973 found it to be a dwarf cepheid with a period of 0.086017 days, and he noticed it showed amplitude variations in the light curve. In 1974, B. Szeidl determined a secondary period of 0.066529 days, while P. Broglia and P. Conconi found a beat period of 0.294 days. It belonged to a group of high amplitude, double mode Delta Scuti variables that included SX Phoenicis, and by 1995 it was classified as a SX Phoenicis variable and a possible halo object. DY Pegasi
DY Pegasi, abbreviated DY Peg, is a binary star system in the northern constellation of Pegasus. It is a well-studied SX Phoenicis variable star with a brightness that ranges from an apparent visual magnitude of 9.95 down to 10.62 with a period of . This system is much too faint to be seen with the naked eye, but can be viewed with large binoculars or a telescope. Based on its high space motion and low abundances of heavier elements, it is a population II star system. Observation history The variability of this star was first reported by Otto Morgenroth in 1934, and the first light curves of its photometric behavior were constructed by A. V. Soloviev in 1938.
