Ruthless Records (Chicago) EPs
Ruthless Records was an American independent record label founded by Eric "Eazy-E" Wright and Jerry Heller in Compton, California on March 3, 1987. All of the Ruthless trademarks have been owned by Comptown Records, Inc. since 1987. Several artists and groups on the label such as N.W.A, Eazy-E, MC Ren, the D.O.C., Michel'le, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony have released RIAA certified albums. History N.W.A days The label's first successful single was Eazy's " Boyz-n-the-Hood". One of the first albums for the label was Eazy's solo debut, ''Eazy-Duz-It'', released in November 1988. It was followed two months later by N.W.A's ''Straight Outta Compton'', which was eventually certified triple Platinum by the RIAA. Eazy-E
Eric Lynn Wright (September 7, 1964 – March 26, 1995), known professionally as Eazy-E, was an American rapper who propelled West Coast rap and gangsta rap by leading the group N.W.A and its label, Ruthless Records. Eazy-E is often referred to as the "Godfather of Gangsta Rap". Born in Compton, California, Wright had several legal troubles before founding Ruthless in 1987. After a short solo career with frequent collaboration with Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, they joined, forming N.W.A, later that year. N.W.A's debut studio album, '' Straight Outta Compton'', was released in 1989. Controversial upon release, it is now ranked among the greatest and most influential albums ever. Theresa Beth (born January 18, 1965), known professionally as Tairrie B (pronounced "Terry"), is an American rapper and singer. She first established herself as a rapper under the tutelage of Eazy-E. After releasing her debut album, '' Power of a Woman'' (1990) on Ruthless Records, she formed the rap metal band Manhole (later Tura Satana). Career She started her music career as part of the female dance group Bardeux. After the release of their debut single, "Three-Time Lover", in 1987, she left the group. Under the tutelage of Eazy-E, she was later signed to his label Ruthless Records (under a new imprint called Comptown Records) and released her first album, '' Power of a Woman'', which, unlike usual Ruthless fare, was distributed by MCA Records. Livin' Like Hustlers
''Livin' Like Hustlers'' is the debut album by American hip hop group Above the Law. It was released on February 20, 1990, via Ruthless Records; an advanced promo cassette version was released two months earlier. The album was produced by Dr. Dre and Above the Law and featured a guest performance from N.W.A on "The Last Song". Eazy-E served as executive producer. It peaked at number 14 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and number 75 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' 200. The album included two hit singles " Murder Rap" and "Untouchable", which both charted at number one on the Hot Rap Songs. Above The Law (group)
Above the Law was an American hip hop group from Pomona, California, founded in 1989 by Cold 187um, Lay Law, KMG the Illustrator, Go Mack, and DJ Total K-Oss. Biography In 1989, the group signed with Eazy-E's Ruthless Records. While there, the group became an additional influence in pioneering with N.W.A. Their first album on Ruthless, 1990's ''Livin' Like Hustlers'', featured a guest appearance from N.W.A and production from Dr. Dre. Above the Law member Cold 187 um worked closely with Dre on production, and the two greatly influenced each other. The songs " Murder Rap" and "Untouchable" became minor hits from the album. "Murder Rap" appeared in the 2008 film '' Pineapple Express''. The song "Freedom of Speech" was featured in the 1990 movie '' Pump Up the Volume'' and its soundtrack album. ''Niggaz4Life'' (also known as ''Efil4zaggin'' per its mirrored title as seen on the cover) is the second and final studio album by American hip-hop group N.W.A, released on May 28, 1991. It was their final album, as the group disbanded later the same year after the departure of Dr. Dre and songwriter and unofficial member of the group The D.O.C. who both left to form Death Row Records; the album features only four members of the original line-up, as Arabian Prince and Ice Cube had already left the group in 1988 and 1989 respectively. ''Niggaz4Life'' debuted at number 2 on the ''Billboard'' 200, but in its second week peaked at number 1. In 1992, several months after the release of the album, N.W.A released a video named ''Niggaz4Life: The Only Home Video'', which chronicled the making of the album and its three music videos, " Alwayz into Somethin'", " Appetite for Destruction" and "Approach to Danger". ''No One Can Do It Better'' is the first solo album by the D.O.C., released on July 13, 1989, by Ruthless Records and Atlantic Records. It reached no.1 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for two weeks, while peaking in the Top 20 on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA three months after it was released, and Platinum on April 21, 1994. It was the only solo album the D.O.C. recorded before a car accident resulted in a crushed larynx and permanently changed voice. In recent years, however, he has been undergoing vocal surgery. ''Michel'le'' is the debut studio album by American singer Michel'le. It was released on October 23, 1989, on Ruthless Records, Atco Records and Atlantic Records. The album was co produced by Dr. Dre of N.W.A and André “LA Dre” Bolton. The album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America five weeks after its release. Commercial performance Following its release, the record reached number 35 on the ''Billboard'' 200 and number five on the Top R&B Albums chart. Five singles were released, " No More Lies", "Nicety", "If?", "Something in My Heart" and "Keep Watchin'". Kim Renard Nazel (born June 17, 1965), better known by his stage names Arabian Prince or Professor X, is an American rapper and record producer. He was a founding member of N.W.A and contributed to a few tracks from '' N.W.A. and the Posse'' (1987) and their debut studio album ''Straight Outta Compton'' (1989), the latter of which was released shortly after he left the group. Early life Nazel was born in Compton, California, to the son of Joseph "Skippy" Nazel Jr., an African American author and radio talk show host. Antoine Carraby (born December 11, 1961), better known by his stage name DJ Yella, is an American DJ, record producer, and film director from Compton, California. DJ Yella began his career as a member of the World Class Wreckin' Cru along with Dr. Dre. He later joined the pioneering gangsta rap group N.W.A (originally composed of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Arabian Prince and Eazy-E) and became the least vocal but longest-lasting member of the group.
