Rumelange (; ; ) is a Communes of Luxembourg, commune with List of towns in Luxembourg, town status in south-western Luxembourg, on the border with France. Populated places The commune consists of the following villages: * Rumelange * Haut-Tétange (lieu-dit) Population History Rumelange was formed on 25 September 1891, when it was detached from the commune of Kayl. The law forming Rumelange was passed on 27 June 1891. Population As of 1 January 2023, the commune had a population of 5,692. Museum It is the site of some of the underground iron mines no longer in operation. Rumelange is home to Luxembourg's National Mining Museum, Luxembourg, National Mining Museum. National Mining Museum, Luxembourg
The National Mining Museum () of Luxembourg is located in the very south of the country, in Rumelange, which is close to the French border. The museum opened in 1973, at the site of the Walert mine. It provides an on-site exhibition of the tools, machinery, and equipment used from the beginning of the 19th century until the iron-ore mines were closed in the 1980s. Many of the exhibits are deep down in the mine. The museum The museum is located in the very south of the country, in Rumelange, which is close to the French border, using the galleries of the Walert mine, which had operated for sixty years. There was a fatal accident at the mine site in 1935 when Jean-Pierre Bausch, who had been mayor of Rumelange, died. The museum opened in 1973. Foni Tissen
Foni (Alphonse) Tissen (1909–1975) was a Luxembourgish schoolteacher and artist who is remembered principally for his hyperrealistic, darkly humorous paintings, many of which were self-portraits. Early life and education Tissen was born on 3 June 1909 in Rumelange in the south of Luxembourg. After primary school in Rumelange, he attended the Lycée Poincaré in Nancy before studying painting and architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There he met the Luxembourg sculptor Auguste Trémont who not only became a key advisor but a close friend for the rest of his life. In 1929, he embarked on a lengthy world trip on a passenger liner before continuing his studies a few years later in Munich and Brussels. Raymond Vouel
Raymond Vouel (8 April 1923 – 12 February 1987) was a Luxembourgish politician who was Deputy Prime Minister in the Thorn-Vouel cabinet, a coalition between Vouel's Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party and Gaston Thorn's Democratic Party. On 21 July 1976, Vouel left the government to join the European Commission as European Commissioner for Competition. Vouel was born on 8 April 1923 in Rumelange. During World War II he was a member of the French Resistance and later served as a translator for the United States Army. He was also a journalist for the socialist daily newspaper ''Tageblatt ''Tageblatt'' is a German language daily newspaper published in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg by Editpress. Luxembourg's 100 communes ( ; French language, French: ''communes''; ) conform to Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics, LAU Level 2Statec (2003), p. 9&10 and are the country's lowest administrative divisions. List Of Towns In Luxembourg
There are twelve towns in Luxembourg, as defined by statute. Despite the status as towns, they are not all contiguous urban area, urbanised areas. They are similar to Communes of Luxembourg, communes, but have been given a separate legal status. There is a technical difference between the status of commune and towns, but this is limited in practicality. One difference is that ''Échevin (Luxembourg), échevins'' in towns are formally appointed by the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Grand Duke, whereas ''échevins'' for other communes are appointed by the Minister for the Interior of Luxembourg, Minister for the Interior. Emile Kirscht
Emile Kirscht (1913–1994) was a Luxembourgish painter who worked with acrylics and gouache on paper. In 1954, he was a co-founder of the Iconomaques group of abstract artists in Luxembourg. Early life Born on 11 June 1913, he was the sixth of seven children in a working-class family in Rumelange, south of Luxembourg. His father died when he was only four, forcing him to earn a living in a steel mill from an early age. During the Second World War, the Germans deported him after his refusal to join the ''Volksdeutsche Bewegung'' but they later brought him back to work in the Belval steel factory where he remained for the rest of his working life. Without any formal education, he started to paint as a child using a paintbox he had found in a dustbin. He developed his own abilities in the 1940s, soon to be influenced by the lyrical abstract imagery of the Paris School after he went to the 1947 exhibition of French art in Luxembourg City.

Ernest Toussaint
Ernest Toussaint (6 March 1908 – 3 September 1942) was a Luxembourgish boxer who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. He was born in Rumelange. Toussaint represented Luxembourg at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. He defeated Karl Lutz of Austria in the second round before being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Boxing at the 1936 Summer Olympics - Men's heavyweight, heavyweight class by eventual bronze medalist Erling Nilsen of Norway. He was shot in the Hinzert concentration camp (Germany) after being arrested as one of the leaders in the 1942 Luxembourgish general strike, general strike against the Nazi occupation in Luxembourg on 31 August 1942. The country had been protesting against the introduction of compulsory military service for young Luxembourgers in the German army. Toussaint's widow and his two sons were deported to the work camp of Leubus in Silesia. In 1960 Ernest Toussaint was posthumously awarded the Cross of the Order of the Resistance.
