Rufforth is a village in the civil parish of Rufforth with Knapton, in the Unitary authorities of England, unitary authority area of the City of York in North Yorkshire, England. RAF Rufforth
Royal Air Force Rufforth or RAF Rufforth is a former Royal Air Force List of former Royal Air Force stations, station located near Rufforth in North Yorkshire, England. It was used by only one operational squadron on long-range bombing missions during the World War II, Second World War, with most flying dedicated to conversion units under the auspices of nearby RAF Marston Moor. Post-war, the RAF used the site to house maintenance units, gliding schools and observation flights. It was completely disposed of by the MoD in 1981, and now is used for civilian light aircraft and glider flying. History The site at RAF Rufforth was surveyed by the Air Ministry in 1940, and built by John Laing & Son Ltd for the Royal Air Force in 1941 (completed 1942), it is located on the south side of the village. All Saints' Church, Rufforth
All Saints' Church is the parish church of the village of Rufforth, in the rural western part of the City of York, in England. A church was constructed on the site in the 12th century. It was restored in 1832. In 1866, it was described as "much modernised" and "scarcely worth notice". At the time, its nave and chancel were of almost equal length. Its porch was recently built of brick, and it also had a recently added belfry. However, by the late 19th century, the church was in poor repair. From 1894 to 1895, it was demolished, and a new church designed by James Demaine and Walter Brierley was constructed, to seat a congregation of 120. The church was grade II listed in 1987. It was refurbished in 1998, and in 2008, its peal of bells was increased from 3 to 6. The church is built of stone, some of which is reused from the Mediaeval church, and is in the neo-Gothic style. Knapton is a village in the civil parish of Rufforth with Knapton, in the City of York Unitary authorities of England, unitary authority area and ceremonial counties of England, ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. Harrogate (borough)
The Borough of Harrogate was a local government district with borough status in North Yorkshire, England, from 1974 to 2023. Handley Page Halifax
The Handley Page Halifax is a British Royal Air Force (RAF) four-engined heavy bomber of the Second World War. It was developed by Handley Page to the same specification as the contemporary twin-engine Avro Manchester. The Halifax has its origins in the twin-engine ''H.P.56'' proposal of the late 1930s, produced in response to the British Air Ministry's Specification P.13/36 for a capable medium bomber for "world-wide use." The H.P.56 was ordered as a backup to the Avro 679, both aircraft being designed to use the Rolls-Royce Vulture engine. The Handley Page design was altered to use four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines while the rival Avro 679 was produced as the twin-engine Avro Manchester which, while regarded as unsuccessful mainly due to the Vulture engine, was a direct predecessor of the Avro Lancaster. Acomb, North Yorkshire
Acomb , is a village and suburb within the City of York Unitary authorities of England, unitary authority area, in North Yorkshire, England, to the western side of York. It covers the site of the original village of the same name, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is bordered by the suburbs of Holgate to the east, Clifton, York, Clifton to the north and Woodthorpe, North Yorkshire, Woodthorpe to the south. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Acomb was incorporated into the City of York in 1934.
