Constance Rover
Constance Rover (15 December 1910 – 16 February 2005) was an English historian. She educated on behalf of the Workers' Educational Association and became a full-time faculty member of the University of North London, Polytechnic of North London as deputy head of law and sociology law department in 1957. Rover began England's first women's studies course in the early 1960s and wrote the books ''Women's Suffrage and Party Politics in Britain 1866–1914'' and ''Punch Book Of Women's Rights'' in 1967. She retired in 1971, a year after publishing ''Love, Morals And The Feminists''. Rover was a member of the International Alliance of Women board and published ''Rambling Rhymes'' in 1990. "The Wild Rover" (Roud Folk Song Index, Roud 1173) is a very popular and well-travelled Folk music, folk song. Many territories have laid claim to having the original version. History In the English Folk Song and Dance periodical "Folk Music Journal" vol 10 (2015), Brian Peters claimed that the origin of the song was a seventeenth century English Broadside written by Thomas Lanfiere. This evolved into several distinct versions found in England, Scotland, Ireland and North America. Shortly afterwards it became popular in Australia. The song tells the story of a young man who has been away from his hometown for many years. When he returns to his former alehouse, the landlady refuses him credit, until he presents the gold which he has gained while he has been away. The Rovers Return Inn, also known simply as the Rovers, is a fictional public house in the long-running British soap opera ''Coronation Street''. The Rovers Return occupies a corner of the fictional Coronation Street and Rosamund Street set location in the show, set in the fictional Lancashire town of Weatherfield. The pub was constructed by the fictional brewery Newton and Ridley. The name comes from the Ye Olde Rovers Return in Withy Grove, Manchester, a 14th-century building that operated as a licensed public house but ceased to be so in 1924 and was demolished in 1958. The fictional pub has had three in-universe layouts. The original layout generally consisted of the style of a public bar. ''Roverandom'' is a novella by J. R. R. Tolkien, originally told in 1925, about the adventures of a young dog, Rover. In the story, an irritable wizard turns Rover into a toy, and Rover goes to the Moon and under the sea in order to find the wizard again to turn him back into a normal-sized dog. The author wrote ''Roverandom'' for his son Michael to amuse him upon the loss of his favourite toy, a little leaden dog which he lost on a beach of grey shingle stones the same size and colour as the toy. The work is in tone a children's story, but contains many allusions and references in the manner of '' Farmer Giles of Ham''. Rover is a plot device from the 1967 British television programme ''The Prisoner'', and was a crucial tool used to keep 'prisoners' from escaping the Village. It was depicted as a floating white balloon that could coerce, and, if necessary, incapacitate or kill recalcitrant inhabitants of the Village. It also had the ability to subdivide.
