Roman Catholic Diocese Of Orange
The Diocese of Orange in California (Latin: ''Dioecesis Arausicanae in California''; Spanish: Diócesis de Orange; Vietnamese: ''Giáo phận Quận Cam'') is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory, or diocese, of the Catholic Church that covers all of Orange County, California, in the United States. It is a suffragan diocese in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The diocesan cathedral is Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove. In addition to its 56 parish churches, the diocese oversees 41 schools and three general hospitals, plus one disabled and five ethnic ministry centers. The Diocese of Orange was erected in 1976, then grew rapidly with immigrants from Asia and Latin America. It faced a sexual abuse scandal and a resulting $100 million settlement to its victims in 2005, which was the largest such settlement at the time. Christ Cathedral (Latin: ''Cathedralis Christi''; Spanish language, Spanish: ''Catedral de Cristo''; Vietnamese language, Vietnamese: ''Nhà Thờ Chính Tòa Chúa Kitô''), formerly the Crystal Cathedral, is an American church building in Garden Grove, California. Since 2019, it has served as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange. The reflective glass building, originally designed by Philip Johnson/John Burgee Architects, seats 2,248 people. After its completion in 1981, it was described as "the largest glass building in the world". The building has one of the largest musical instruments in the world, the Hazel Wright Organ. Sexual Abuse Scandal In The Roman Catholic Diocese Of Orange
The sexual abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange has been a significant chapter in the American Catholic sexual abuse scandal. The Diocese of Orange is located in Orange County, California. The diocese in 2004 announced a $100 million financial settlement to 87 individuals who were sexually abused by 43 priests, religious brothers and lay workers. Two of the most prolific sexual abusers, Reverends Siegfried Widera and Eleuterio V. Ramos, abused numerous minors and were responsible for tens of millions of dollars in settlements paid by the diocese. As of 2025, two priests in the diocese have been convicted of sexual abuse crimes and sentenced to prison.
