Rhodes (; ) is the largest of the Dodecanese islands of Greece and is their historical capital; it is the List of islands in the Mediterranean#By area, ninth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Administratively, the island forms a separate municipality within the Rhodes (regional unit), Rhodes regional unit, which is part of the South Aegean Administrative regions of Greece, administrative region. The principal town of the island and seat of the municipality is the Rhodes (city), city of Rhodes, which had 50,636 inhabitants in 2011. In 2022, the island had a population of 125,113 people. It is located northeast of Crete and southeast of Athens. Since the 2011 local government reform, it is part of the municipality Rhodes, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. Rodos (Realtime Onboard Dependable Operating System) is a real-time operating system for embedded systems and was designed for application domains demanding high dependability. ''LST-391'' was laid down 14 July 1942 at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Newport News, Virginia, launched 28 October 1942, sponsored by Miss Katherine Wendell Blewett, and commissioned 3 December 1942. During World War II, ''LST-391'' was assigned to the European Theater and participated in the Sicilian occupation (July 1943), Salerno landings (September 1943), and the Invasion of Normandy (June 1944).
