Its population is 119,828 (2021). Rize is a typical Turkish provincial capital with little in the way of nightlife or entertainment. Since the border with Georgia was opened in the early 1990s, the Black Sea coast road has been widened and the town is much wealthier than it used to be. Rize Province
Rize Province () is a province of northeast Turkey, on the eastern Black Sea coast between Trabzon and Artvin. The province of Erzurum is to the south. Its area is 3,835 km2, and its population is 344,016 (2022). The capital is the city of Rize. It was formerly known as Lazistan, however the designation of the term of Lazistan was officially banned in 1926. The province is home to Turkish, Laz, Hemshin and Georgian communities. Etymology The name comes from Greek (riza), meaning "mountain slopes". The Georgian, Laz, and Armenian names also have Greek origins: their names in respective order are ''Rize'' (რიზე), ''Rizini'' (რიზინი), and ''Rize'' (Ռիզե). Kız Kulesi, Rize
Kız Kulesi is a medieval castle located on small islet, 1 km west of the center of Pazar, Rize Province, Turkey. According to A. Bryer it was built between 13th to 14th centuries, during the time of the Trebizond Empire. Kaçkar Mountains
The Kaçkar Mountains (; , ''Kajkar''), formerly known as the Lazistan Mountains or the Mountains of Khaghtik(), are a mountain range that rises above the Black Sea coast in northeastern Turkey. With the highest peak, Kaçkar Dağı, at an elevation of , and mountain plateaus at about in elevation, the range is the highest part of the Pontic Mountains. The Kaçkars are glacier, glaciated mountains that are Alps, alpine in character, with steep rocky peaks and numerous mountain lakes. The area was declared a national park in 1994. Trabzon
Trabzon, historically known as Trebizond, is a city on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Turkey and the capital of Trabzon Province. The city was founded in 756 BC as "Trapezous" by colonists from Miletus. It was added into the Achaemenid Empire by Cyrus the Great and was later part of the independent Kingdom of Pontus that challenged Rome until 68 BC. Fırtına River Bridges
The Fırtına River bridges are a group of more than 20 well-preserved Ottoman-era bridges over the Fırtına river and its tributaries near Çamlıhemşin in Rize Province at the eastern end of Turkey's Black Sea coast. Because of the steep-sided valleys and frequent floods, the bridges have characteristically high arches. Many of the bridges date from the 18th and 19th centuries, but some may be older.
