Relizane Province
Relizane () is a province ('' wilaya'') of Algeria. Relizane is the capital. Other localities include Bendaoud, Bouzegza, Hamri, Kalaa, Mazouna and Zemmoura. The Wilaya of Relizane massacres of 4 January 1998 happened in Relizane. History The province was created from Mostaganem Province in 1984. Provinces Of Algeria
Algeria, as of 2024, is divided into 58 wilaya, wilayas (province, provinces). Prior to December 18, 2019, there were 48 provinces. The 58 provinces are divided into 1,541 baladiyahs (Municipalities of Algeria, municipalities). The name of a province is always that of its capital city. Ain Tarik District
Ain Tarik () is a district located in the southeast of Relizane Province, Algeria. The District of Ain Tarik consists of two municipalities: Ain Tarik and Had Chakkala. According to a population census from 2002, the district exceeded 19,000 people. The district covers 322 km2. History Geography The district is bordered by Ammi Moussa District to the north and west, Ramka District to the east, as well as Tiaret Province and Tissemsilt Province to the south and southeast. Ain Tarik is surrounded by Bourokba (بوركبة) and El-Aria (العرية) mountains from the east, Ouled Bouriah (أولاد بورياح) mountains from the west, and El-Aria (العرية) and Malouia (ملوية) from the south. Mostaganem Province
Mostaganem () is a province (''wilaya'') of Algeria, with a population of 892165 inhabitants in 2019, with a density of 393/square kilometers. Its capital is Mostaganem. Geography The land relief in Mostaganem Province can be divided into four regions: the Dahra Range to the east, the Mostaganem Plateau to the south, the Chelif River valley which separates the two highland regions, and the plains on the province's southern border which lie next to the marshes of the Macta. Wilaya Of Relizane Massacres Of 4 January 1998
The Wilaya of Relizane massacres of 4 January 1998 took place in three remote villages around Oued Rhiou about 150 miles (240 km) west of Algiers, during the Algerian conflict of the 1990s. At least 172 villagers were killed in a single day of Ramadan: * at Had Chekala, no residents survived; more than thirty guerrillas burned the village down afterwards * at Remka, initial reports claimed 117 killed; in 2006, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia declared that the true toll had been 1000, and that the government had "hid enthe truth because you don't go into battle proclaiming defeat."
