Madagascar is divided into 23 region, regions (''faritra''). These formerly second-tier administrative divisions became first-level administrative divisions when the former six Provinces of Madagascar, provinces were dissolved on 4 October 2009. Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, is an island country that includes the island of Madagascar and numerous smaller peripheral islands. Atsinanana
Atsinanana is a coastal region in eastern Madagascar. It borders Analanjirofo region in the north, Alaotra-Mangoro in the west, Vakinankaratra and Amoron'i Mania in the southwest, and Vatovavy in the south. The region contains over 285km of coastline, which includes many beaches and cultural heritage sites. Atsinanana is known for its fish breeding and fishing near its ports, ore claims and mining activity, as well as its agriculture. The capital of the region is Toamasina, and the population was 1,484,403 in 2018. The area of Atsinanana is , almost exactly the same as its neighbor, Analanjirofo. Toamasina Province
The Toamasina Province is a former provinces of Madagascar, province of Madagascar with an area of 71,911 km2. It had a population of 2,855,600 (2004). Its capital was Toamasina, the most important seaport of the country. The province was also known as Tamatave Province. Except for Toliara Province, Toliara, Toamasina Province bordered all of the country's other provinces; Antsiranana Province, Antsiranana in the north, Mahajanga Province, Mahajanga in the northwest, Antananarivo Province, Antananarivo in the southwest and Fianarantsoa Province, Fianarantsoa in the south. Ambatondrazaka
Ambatondrazaka () is a city (commune urbaine) in Madagascar Ambatondrazaka is also the capital of the Alaotra-Mangoro region and the Ambatondrazaka District. Geography The city is situated south of Alaotra, the greatest lake in Madagascar. History The oral history states the town was founded by Randriambololona and children. Alaotra-Mangoro is a region in eastern Madagascar. It borders Sofia Region in north, Analanjirofo in northeast, Atsinanana in east, Vakinankaratra in southwest, Analamanga in west and Betsiboka in northwest. Maintirano
Maintirano is a coastal city, urban municipality, and Catholic bishopric in western Madagascar approximately 325 kilometres west of the capital Antananarivo. It belongs to the Districts of Madagascar, district of Maintirano District, Maintirano, which is a part of Melaky Region – and is capital of both. The population of the commune was estimated to be approximately 25,788 in 2018. The city is inhabited mainly by the Sakalava tribe. Economy and infrastructure The climate is fairly hot and access to the region is difficult due to lack of roads and few commercial flights. Maevatanana
Maevatanana is an urban municipality in Madagascar. The city is in the central-north part of the island, at the Ikopa River, and is connected by the national road RN 4 to Antananarivo and Mahajanga. The altitude is low and as it is located far from the coast, temperatures tend to be high. The city belongs to the district of Maevatanana, which is a part of Betsiboka Region. Maevatanana is the capital of the Betsiboka region, and the population of the commune was estimated to be approximately 24,000 in 2001 commune census. In addition to primary schooling the town offers secondary education at both junior and senior levels. Mahajanga
Mahajangā (French: Majunga) is a city and an administrative district on the northwest coast of Madagascar. The city of Mahajanga (Mahajanga I) is the capital of the Boeny Region. The district (identical to the city) had a population of 258,068 in 2020. City Mahajanga is a seaport, the second most important one in Madagascar after Toamasina. The marine terminal accommodates containerships and small (150 gross ton) general cargo freighters. Because of the limited water depth at the wharf, only small ships can call at the terminal. Deeper-draft ships anchor off the terminal and transfer cargo to and from barges, which move it to and from the terminal. Severe storms during December 2006 damaged the bulkhead, allowing water to flow in and wash backfill out from under the terminal's paving blocks.
