Rebel Records
Rebel Records is an independent American record label based in Charlottesville, Virginia that specializes in bluegrass and old time music. The label was founded in Mount Rainier, Maryland in 1959 by Dick Freeland, Bill Carroll and Sonny Compton. In 1980, Freeland sold the label to David Freeman, the founder of County Records. Freeman later handed over management of the label to his son Mark Freeman. Rebel has more than 340 titles in print by more than 50 different artists and groups, and continues to release several new titles each year. Bluegrass Music
Bluegrass music is a genre of American roots music that developed in the 1940s in the Appalachian region of the United States. The genre derives its name from the band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Bluegrass has roots in African American genres like blues and jazz and North European genres, such as Irish ballads and dance tunes. Unlike country, it is traditionally played exclusively on acoustic instruments such as the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar and upright bass. It was further developed by musicians who played with Monroe, including 5-string banjo player Earl Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt. Bill Monroe once described bluegrass music as, "It's a part of Methodist, Holiness and Baptist traditions. It's blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound." Bluegrass features acoustic stringed instruments and emphasizes the off-beat. David Parmley
David L. Parmley (born February 1, 1959) is a bluegrass vocalist, guitarist, and award-winning bandleader. He is best known for being a co-founder of both the Bluegrass Cardinals and Continental Divide. Biography Parmley was born in White House, Tennessee, but grew up in Los Angeles, California. His father Don Parmley was an esteemed bluegrass banjoist. Bluegrass Cardinals In 1974, Parmley began playing bluegrass professionally at age 17, singing lead vocals and playing guitar with his father Don and mandolinist Randy Graham in the Bluegrass Cardinals. In 1991, Parmley left the Bluegrass Cardinals and moved to Nashville to pursue a solo career in country music. Kenny Smith (bluegrass)
Kenny Smith is an American guitarist and vocalist in the bluegrass tradition. Biography Early years Smith is originally from Nine Mile, Indiana. His father and grandfather played fiddle, and Smith started playing guitar at age 4. He learned to play fiddle tunes on the guitar by listening to Norman Blake's albums. Lonesome River Band Smith began playing professionally with Claire Lynch and the Front Porch Stringband in 1993. In 1996, Smith joined Sammy Shelor, Don Rigsby, and Ronnie Bowman as a member of The Lonesome River Band, replacing Tim Austin. While a part of this group, Smith won the International Bluegrass Music Association's (IBMA) Guitarist of the Year award in 1999 and 2000. He left the band in 2001. Keith Whitley
Jackie Keith Whitley (July 1, 1954 – May 9, 1989) was an American country music and bluegrass singer and songwriter. During his career, he released only two albums, but charted 12 singles on the ''Billboard'' country charts, and seven more after his death. Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Whitley grew up in nearby Sandy Hook. He began his career there in 1970, performing in Ralph Stanley's band. Establishing himself as a lead singer in bluegrass music, Whitley moved to Nashville in 1983 and began his recording career there. His first top-20 country hit single, " Miami, My Amy", was released in 1986. In 1988, his first three singles from his second studio album '' Don't Close Your Eyes'', the title song, " When You Say Nothing at All", and " I'm No Stranger to the Rain" were number-one hits. Junior Sisk
Harry Carpenter "Junior" Sisk Jr. is an American guitarist and vocalist in the bluegrass tradition, best known for his work with his band Rambler's Choice. He cites the hard-driving bluegrass of the Stanley Brothers as a major influence on his approach to bluegrass music. Biography Early years Sisk was born in Arlington but was raised in Ferrum, Virginia. His early interest in music was sparked by his father Harry Sisk Sr., who wrote songs and played guitar, and his mother who sang. When Sisk was 14, his parents gifted him with an upright bass. Sisk began performing in local bands at age 16, first playing bass but eventually switching to guitar. He also played in his family's band Dreamin' Creek with his father and cousins. John Starling (musician)
John Lewis Starling (March 26, 1940 – May 2, 2019) was an American musician. He is an International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame inductee bluegrass musician and composer, founding member of the bluegrass group The Seldom Scene, an otolaryngological physician for communities in Alabama, Washington, D.C., and Virginia, and an amateur architectural designer designing the field house at Virginia Military Institute, the house his parents retired in and the floor plans for the building he practiced medicine in.
