The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency of the United States government that regulates communications by radio, television, wire, internet, wi-fi, satellite, and cable across the United States. WAPS (91.3 MHz) is a non-commercial educational FM radio station licensed to Akron, Ohio. Owned and operated by Akron Public Schools, the station airs an Adult Album Alternative (AAA) format as “91.3 the Summit”. WAPS has a standard analog transmission and broadcasts to over three HD Radio channels and is available online. WAPS primarily serves the Akron metro area but also simulcasts over a single full power repeater: WKTL (90.7 FM), licensed to Struthers, and operated by Struthers High School, which broadcasts the WAPS signal to the Youngstown metro area, as well as translator W211BT, licensed to Athens. WAOL (99.5 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station licensed to Ripley, Ohio, and serving the southeastern suburbs of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. It carries a hot adult contemporary radio format and is owned by Donald Bowles and Venita Frame Bowles, through licensee Dreamcatcher Communications, Inc. It calls itself "99-5 The Edge." The Pillar of Fire International, also known as the Pillar of Fire Church, is a Methodist Christian denomination with headquarters in Zarephath, New Jersey. The Pillar of Fire Church affirms the Methodist Articles of Religion and as of 1988, had 76 congregations around the world, including the United States, as well as "Great Britain, India, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, the Philippines, Spain, and former Yugoslavia". It is a listener-supported radio station owned by Pillar of Fire International. The Class B, 50,000-watt signal reaches the greater Cincinnati area, including Northern Kentucky and Eastern Indiana. WAKT-LP is a low-power FM community radio station from Toledo, Ohio. Overview A small nonprofit, Toledo Integrated Media Education (TIME), applied for a low-power FM license on the 106.1FM frequency in 2013. After receiving approval to broadcast from the FCC, the organizers claimed the available call sign of WAKT and worked to assemble the appropriate funding, equipment, and permitting to begin broadcasting. The station received authorization from the FCC to broadcast on 106.1 MHz in December 2014 and began broadcasting in a limited capacity in December 2017. Due to a lack of permitting from the local government, a makeshift tower only 30' high was used until permitting for a 100' tower could be obtained. The station began broadcasting from a 100' tower in October 2022, expanding its reach to much of the Toledo, Ohio metropolitan area.
