Qeqqata
Qeqqata (, ) is a municipality in western Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. The municipality was named after its location in the central-western part of the country. Its population is 9,378 as of January 2020. The administrative center of the municipality is in Sisimiut (formerly called Holstensborg). Creation It consists of the previously unincorporated area of Kangerlussuaq and two former municipalities of western Greenland, Maniitsoq and Sisimiut. Geography In the south and east, the municipality is flanked by the Sermersooq municipality; however, settlements and associated trade are concentrated mainly alongside the coast. In the north, it is bordered by the Qeqertalik municipality. Sisimiut
Sisimiut (), also known by its Danish name Holstensborg or Holsteinsborg, is the capital and largest city of the Qeqqata municipality, the second-largest city in Greenland, and the largest Arctic city in North America.The term 'city' is loosely used to describe any populated area in Greenland, given that the most populated place is Nuuk, the capital, with 19,872 inhabitants. The term 'Arctic' is interpreted as strictly the area within the Arctic Circle. It is located in central-western Greenland, on the coast of Davis Strait, approximately north of Nuuk. ''Sisimiut'' literally means "the residents at the foxholes" (). Kangerlussuaq
Kangerlussuaq (; ; ) is a settlement in western Greenland in the Qeqqata municipalities of Greenland, municipality located at the head of the Kangerlussuaq Fjord, fjord of the same name. It was Greenland's main air transport hub and the site of Greenland's largest commercial airport until the new airport opened at Nuuk on 28 November 2024. The airport dates from American settlement during and after World War II, when the site was known as Bluie West-8 and then Sondrestrom Air Base. The Kangerlussuaq area is also home to Greenland's most diverse terrestrial fauna, including muskoxen, caribou, and gyrfalcons. The settlement's economy and population of 508 is almost entirely reliant on the airport and tourist industry. Maniitsoq
Maniitsoq () or Sukkertoppen is a town on Maniitsoq Island, western Greenland located in the Qeqqata municipality. With 2,534 inhabitants , it is the sixth-largest town in Greenland. History Archaeological finds indicate that the area has been settled for more than 4,000 years. The modern town was founded as New or Nye-Maniitsoq in 1782 by Danish colonists relocating from the original Sukkertoppen, a trading post founded in 1755 at the site of present-day Kangaamiut. In time, the original name was taken up again. In the 19th century, the town served as a major trading post for the Royal Greenland Trading Department's trade in reindeer hides. Malik Berthelsen is a Greenlandic politician serving as the mayor of Qeqqata, chairman of the Qeqqata municipal council, and a former member of the Parliament of Greenland, the Inatsisartut. Kangerlussuaq Airport
Kangerlussuaq Airport (, , formerly ''Søndre Strømfjord Lufthavn'' in Danish) is an airport in Kangerlussuaq, a settlement in the Qeqqata municipality in central-western Greenland. It was originally built as Sondrestrom Air Base (Bluie West-8) in 1941, but assumed its current civilian role in 1992. Qeqertalik
Qeqertalik (, ) is a municipality of Greenland created in 2018 from four southern regions of the former Qaasuitsup Municipality. It is the least populated municipality at a population of 6,340, despite this it is the 2nd most densely populated municipality with 0.11 people per square kilometer. Geography Qeqertalik Municipality is flanked in the south by the Qeqqata municipality and in the northeast by Avannaata.
