Qeqertalik
Qeqertalik (, ) is a municipality of Greenland created in 2018 from four southern regions of the former Qaasuitsup Municipality. It is the least populated municipality at a population of 6,340, despite this it is the 2nd most densely populated municipality with 0.11 people per square kilometer. Geography Qeqertalik Municipality is flanked in the south by the Qeqqata municipality and in the northeast by Avannaata. Over the ice cap, it is bordered in the east by the Sermersooq municipality, however this border runs north–south ( 45° West meridian) through the center of the Greenland ice sheet (), and as such is free of traffic. Qasigiannguit
Qasigiannguit (), also known as Christianshåb, is a town located in western Greenland on the southeastern shore of Disko Bay in the Qeqertalik municipality. Aasiaat
Aasiaat (), also known as Egedesminde, is a town in the Qeqertalik municipality in western Greenland, located on its namesake island in the heart of Aasiaat Archipelago at the southern end of Disko Bay. With a population of 2,980 as of 2021, it is Greenland's fifth-largest town. Etymology In Greenlandic, Aasiaat means "Spiders" (). The exact explanation for this is yet to be determined because of the lack of historical facts of the origin of the name. The most common assumption is that when the town was founded as a settlement, spiders were abundant. Alternatively it might be a relic of Inuit mythology, wherein spiders bring good luck. Similar to the rest of Greenland, spiders are rarely seen in the town. Qeqertarsuaq
Qeqertarsuaq (, historically known as Godhavn) is a port and town in Qeqertalik municipality, located on the south coast of Disko Island on the west coast of Greenland. Founded in 1773, the town is now home to a campus of the University of Copenhagen known as Arctic Station. ''Qeqertarsuaq'' is the Kalaallisut name for Disko Island and is also now used for several other islands on Greenland, including those formerly known as Upernavik and Herbert Island. Qeqertarsuaq means 'the big island' in Kalaallisut (). In 2020, the town had 839 inhabitants. The remainder of the population of the island (less than 50 people) lives in the Kangerluk settlement, a few hours by boat to the northwest. Avannaata
Avannaata (, ) is a municipality of Greenland created on 1 January 2018 from the bulk of the former Qaasuitsup municipality. It encompasses an area of 522,700 km2 and has 10,726 inhabitants. Geography In the south, Avannaata is flanked by the Qeqertalik municipality. In the southeast, it is bordered by the Sermersooq municipality; the border runs north–south ( 45° West meridian) through the center of the Greenland ice sheet (), so is free of traffic. Qeqqata
Qeqqata (, ) is a municipality in western Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. The municipality was named after its location in the central-western part of the country. Its population is 9,378 as of January 2020. The administrative center of the municipality is in Sisimiut (formerly called Holstensborg). Creation It consists of the previously unincorporated area of Kangerlussuaq and two former municipalities of western Greenland, Maniitsoq and Sisimiut. Sermersooq () is a municipality in Greenland, formed on 1 January 2009 from five previous, smaller municipalities. Akunnaaq
Akunnaaq (old spelling: ''Akúnâk'') is a settlement in the Qeqertalik municipality in western Greenland. Its population was 66 in 2020. Akunnaaq is located east of Aasiaat on the Akunnaap Nunnaa island. The settlement was founded in 1850. Transport Air Greenland serves the village as part of government contract, with winter-only helicopter flights between Akunnaaq Heliport and Aasiaat Airport. Settlement flights in the Disko Bay are unique in that they are operated only during winter and spring. During summer and autumn, when the waters of Disko Bay are navigable, communication between settlements is by sea only, serviced by Diskoline.Diskoline timetable
