Pyrgomorphidae
Pyrgomorphidae is a family of grasshoppers in the order Orthoptera; it is the only family in the superfamily Pyrgomorphoidea. Pyrgomorphidae are found worldwide in tropical and warm temperate regions (though none are from US mainland), but the vast majority of the family's approximately 500 species are from Africa, Asia and Australia. Their name is probably derived from ''pyrgos'' (Greek: ''Πύργος'') meaning "tower": a reference to the form (''morph'') of the head in the type genus '' Pyrgomorpha'' and other genera. They may sometimes be known as "gaudy grasshoppers", due to the striking, bright aposematic colouration of a number of genera, warning of their toxicity. However, about 90% of the species in the family are harmless and well-camouflaged, with a few, notably '' Sphenarium'', even caught for human consumption. Phymateus
''Phymateus'' is a genus of fairly large grasshoppers of the family Pyrgomorphidae, native to shrubland, semi-deserts, savanna, woodland, gardens and cultivated areas in Sub-Saharan Africa, with ten species in the African mainland and two species in Madagascar. Some species have bright aposematic colours and are highly toxic. Description ''Phymateus'' are African grasshoppers that typically are about long as adults, with females generally being larger than males of the same species. Some species at maturity are capable of long migratory flights. They raise and rustle wings when disturbed and may secrete a noxious fluid from the thoracic joint.''Field Guide to Insects'' - Picker, Griffiths & Weaving (2004) Their toxins, which are accumulated from the toxic plants they feed on, can be very strong and there have been reported deaths in birds and mammals, including humans, after eating ''Phymateus'' grasshoppers. While they do show a preference for feeding on certain toxic plants, no ...

Dictyophorus Spumans
''Dictyophorus spumans'', the koppie foam grasshopper, , or African foam grasshopper, is a species of grasshopper in the family Pyrgomorphidae indigenous to southern Africa. The name "foaming grasshopper" derives from the insect's ability to produce a toxic foam from its thoracic glands. The foam is created by a combination of hemolymph with air from the grasshopper's spiracles. Its genus '' Dictyophorus'' is closely related to ''Phymateus''. Adult males are typically long and females typically , but can grow up to a length of . The neck shield has a warty surface, and the grasshopper's colors are highly variable but usually with at least parts that are contrasting and bright. It is toxic due to the poisons that it sequesters from its diet, which includes a large number of toxic and distasteful plants such as milkweed ''Asclepias'' is a genus of herbaceous, perennial, flowering plants known as milkweeds, named for their latex, a milky substance containing cardiac glycoside ...

Atractomorpha (Pyrgomorphidae)
''Atractomorpha'' is a genus in the Pyrgomorphidae, a family of grasshoppers, found in Africa, Asia, and Australia. Biology Not much is written about the biology of the ''Atractomorpha'', but they are herbivores typical of the Orthoptera, so it is understandable that some species seem to be minor pests in gardens and that some, such as ''Atractomorpha psittacina'' and ''Atractomorpha bedeli'', are significant pests in rice. As with many grasshoppers in various families, the males are smaller than the females and ride on them long before copulation. They remain there during the period in which the female achieves sexual receptiveness. Similar strategies are common in vertebrates such as some amphibians, as well as various invertebrates, where the males attempt to keep rivals from mating with the female. At least some ''Atractomorpha'' species also share a habit with various generally sedentary Orthoptera such as some Pamphagidae, of producing their excreta in the form of relat ...

Atractomorpha Similis (8416619989)
''Atractomorpha similis'', commonly known as the northern grass pyrgomorph, is a species of grasshopper in the genus '' Atractomorpha''. It occurs in Australia. Taxonomy ''Atractomorpha similis'' is a member of the genus '' Atractomorpha'', which is part of family Pyrgomorphidae. First described by Bolívar in 1884, it was long classified as a southern variant of ''A. crenaticeps''. However, in 1960 Banerjee and Kevan distinguished it on morphological grounds. Synonyms include ''A. australiana'' and ''A. dentifrons''. Description ''Atractomorpha similis'' averages in length. The species' compact body is tapered at the head and abdomen. This grasshopper relies on camouflage to avoid predators, rarely attempting escape. ''Atractomorpha similis'' (as with other members of its genus) is depauperate in heterochromatin, though the total amount of that DNA varies between populations. The species is highly polymorphic in its chromosomes, each of which exists in 10 to 50 morphs. Males ...
