Produce 101
''Produce 101'' () is a reality television talent competition franchise created by South Korean entertainment conglomerate CJ E&M, based around the formation of a K-pop girl group or boy group. The format is noted for having no panel of judges, employing audience participation to make decisions, as well as for starting with a very large number of competitors, 101, narrowing that number down to the final 11. The franchise began in 2016 and has since expanded to China, Japan and Thailand. The franchise has attracted a wide following in the world. More than 10 million people cast votes during the finale of Season 2 in 2017, equivalent to a fifth of South Korea's population. In 2018, the eight episodes of '' Produce 101 China'' attracted more than 4.3 billion views on Tencent Video. ''Produce 101'' () is a reality competition show created by Mnet. It premiered on January 22, 2016, at 22:00 KST and aired every Friday. It is the first season of the South Korean version of the franchise of the same name. The second season premiered on April 7, 2017, this time featuring all male contestants. Concept and format ''Produce 101'' was a large-scale girl group unit project produced by CJ ENM and Signal Entertainment Group for Mnet. The show was produced in collaboration with 46 entertainment companies from both inside and outside of South Korea. At about four billion won (approximately $3.33 million), it had the second-largest budget out of all Mnet TV programs at the time. The show's concept hinged on audience participation: the viewers got to choose the final group's members, concept, debut song, and name. ''Produce 101 Japan'' () is a 2019 Japanese reality competition show, co-produced by Yoshimoto Kogyo and CJ E&M. It is a spin-off of the South Korean ''Produce 101'' franchise. The show follows 101 contestants with the intention of producing a permanent eleven-member boy group. It premiered on September 25, 2019, on TBS. The first episode was rerun on the streaming platform GyaO! the following day, which also broadcast the remainder of the show every Thursday at 21:00 JST ( GMT+9). The finale was aired on December 11, 2019, on TBS at 19:00 JST (GMT+9). The final top eleven contestants debuted as the permanent boy group JO1.
