Presidents Of The Marshall Islands
The following is a list of President (government title), presidents of the Marshall Islands, since the establishment of that office in 1979. The president of the Republic of the Marshall Islands is the head of state and government of the Marshall Islands. The President is elected by the Legislature of the Marshall Islands, Nitijeļā (Legislature) from among its members. Presidents pick cabinet members from the Nitijeļā. Amata Kabua was elected as the first President of the Republic in 1979. Subsequently, he was re-elected to four-year terms in 1983, 1987, 1991, and 1996. After Amata Kabua's death in office, his first cousin, Imata Kabua, won a special election in 1997. Casten Nemra, who was elected and took office in January 2016, was replaced by Hilda Heine one week later. The Marshallese president, David Kabua, is the son of Amata Kabua. 2009 Marshall Islands Presidential Election
An indirect presidential election was held in the Marshall Islands on 26 October 2009 following the ousting of incumbent President Litokwa Tomeing in the nation's first successful vote of no confidence on 21 October 2009. Tomeing had been temporarily replaced by Ruben Zackhras as acting president. Only two candidates were nominated for President, who is elected by the 33-member Nitijela. The candidates were Speaker Jurelang Zedkaia and former President Kessai Note, who had led the no confidence measure against Tomeing. Tomeing and Kessai had engaged in a power struggle since Kessai had lost his re-election bid in the 2007 election. Under the terms of the Marshallese constitution, the Nitijela had fourteen days to elect a new president. Jurelang Zedkaia
Iroijlaplap Jurelang Zedkaia (13 July 1950 – 7 October 2015) was a Marshall Islands, Marshallese politician and Iroijlaplap. He served as the President of the Marshall Islands, President of the Marshall Islands from 2009 to 2012. He was 2009 Marshall Islands presidential election, elected as the country's 5th head of state on October 26, 2009, following the ouster of his predecessor, Litokwa Tomeing, in the country's first successful vote of no confidence. Biography Zedkaia was the ''Iroijlaplap'', or traditional paramount chief, of Majuro Atoll, which is the location of the country's capital, Arno Atoll, Arno and Mili Atoll, Mili atolls. Ruben Zackhras
Ruben R. Zackhras (4 December 1947 – 26 December 2018) was a Marshallese politician. He was acting President of the Marshall Islands from 21 October 2009 to 26 October 2009. He previously served as Minister of Finance from 1992 to 1998. Zackhras, graduated from the University of Guam in 1971 holding a BA in Public Administration, served in Marshallese politics for 36 years and in the Nitijela from 1979 to 2015, and served as a representative of Ailinglaplap Atoll. His initial political career was combined with his role as a teacher. He was elected to the Marshallese constitutional convention in 1977. He was appointment as Minister of Transportation and Communication in 1979. A motion or vote of no confidence (or the inverse, a motion or vote of confidence) is a motion and corresponding vote thereon in a deliberative assembly (usually a legislative body) as to whether an officer (typically an executive) is deemed fit to continue to occupy their office. 2007 Marshallese General Election
General elections were held in the Marshall Islands on 19 November 2007. Campaign One of the election issues was whether to switch recognition from Taiwan to the China, with the opposition in favour of recognising China instead. Litokwa Tomeing
Iroij Litokwa Tomeing (14 October 1939 – 12 October 2020) was the President of the Marshall Islands from January 2008 until October 2009. Biography Early and personal life Litokwa Tomeing was born on Wotje Atoll, in the Japanese-administered Marshall Islands, on October 14, 1939. From 1950 until 1954, Tomeing attended the Catholic Elementary School, first in Likiep and then in Jaluit. In 1961, Tomeing graduated from PIC High School in Pohnpei. He studied at the University of Hawaiʻi from 1970 until 1972 on an extension program. Tomeing and his wife, Arlin, had seven children and several grandchildren. Litokwa died on 12 October 2020, in Springdale, Arkansas, United States. Career Tomeing was a traditional chief.
