Powerlifting At The 2022 Commonwealth Games
Para powerlifting was one of the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham, England. This was the sixth staging of para powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games since its inclusion in 2002, and the second staging within England specifically. The competition took place on 4 August 2022, spread across four weight classes (two per gender). Schedule The competition schedule is as follows: Venue The para powerlifting competition was held at the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull. Five other sports - badminton, boxing, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting - also took place there. Qualification A total of 40 powerlifters (20 per gender) qualified to compete at the Games. National Exhibition Centre
The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) is an exhibition centre located in Marston Green, Solihull, West Midlands, England. It is near junction 6 of the M42 motorway, and is adjacent to Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International railway station. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1976. History The NEC was originally going to be built adjacent to the M1 motorway (junction 21) near Leicester but it was turned down by Leicestershire County Council with claims that "The big shows won't move away from London". The building was designed by Edward Mills. In November 1971, the Secretary of State for the Environment granted outline planning approval for the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Weightlifting was one of the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham, England. This was the nineteenth staging of weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games since its inclusion in 1950, and the second staging within England specifically. The competition took place between 30 July and 3 August 2022, spread across sixteen weight classes (eight per gender). Schedule The competition schedule is as follows: Venue The weightlifting competitions will be held at the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull. Five other sports - badminton, boxing, netball, para powerlifting and table tennis - will also take place there. Qualification A total of 180 weightlifters (90 per gender) qualify to compete at the Games. Folashade Alice Oluwafemiayo (born 11 March 1985) is a Nigerian Paralympian athlete. Personal life Oluwafemiayo was born in Jos, and she is married to another Paralympic athlete, with whom she has a child. Career In 2012, Oluwafemiayo won silver medal in the women's 75kg category at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, breaking the world record in the process. She also won gold medal at the 2017 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Mexico. However, she was suspended a year later for breaking anti-doping laws. Olivia Broome
Olivia Broome (born 13 June 2001) is a para powerlifter who won a bronze medal in the under-50 kg event at the delayed 2020 Summer Paralympics. She is the British and world junior record holder in the under-50 kg event, and has won multiple Para Powerlifting World Cup medals. She also won the junior under-50 kg event at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships, silver medal in the women's 50 kg event, and a silver medal in the lightweight event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Zoe Newson
Zoe Newson (born 24 March 1992) is a British powerlifter. She is a two-time bronze medalist at the Summer Paralympics and she won the silver medal in her event at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships. In 2012 Newson posted a European record at the IPC Powerlifting British Championships and took bronze in the under 40 kg class for Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. Micky Yule
Michael Yule (born 24 December 1978) is a British Paralympic powerlifter competing in the -80 kg class. In 2021, he won the bronze medal in the men's 72 kg event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. In the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games Micky won Bronze in the Men's Heavyweight category. Personal history Yule was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1978. He grew up in Wallyford, East Lothian. Yule joined the British Army at the age of 17 and in 2007 he was working as a diving instructor at the Defence Diving School on Horsea Island, Port Solent, for three years before being posted to Afghanistan.
