Portishead (band)
Portishead ( ) is an English Electronic music, electronic band formed in 1991 in Bristol. The band comprises Beth Gibbons (vocals), Geoff Barrow (multiple instruments, production), and Adrian Utley (guitar). Dave McDonald, an audio engineer who helped produce their first two albums, is sometimes regarded as the fourth member. Portishead's debut album, ''Dummy (album), Dummy'' (1994), fused hip-hop production with an atmospheric style reminiscent of spy film soundtracks and yearning vocals from Gibbons. It was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, becoming a landmark album in the emerging trip-hop genre. However, the band disliked being associated with the term. Their two other studio albums, ''Portishead (album), Portishead'' (1997) and ''Third (Portishead album), Third'' (2008), received similar acclaim. ''Portishead'' is the second studio album by the English electronic music group Portishead, released on 29 September 1997 by Go! Discs. Music With ''Portishead'', the band chose to eschew sampling other records, which had been a defining feature of their debut album '' Dummy''. Instead, they created original pieces which they wove into the songs, resulting in a more textured sound. The only song to employ samples was " Only You", which incorporates elements of Ken Thorne's '' Inspector Clouseau'' score and The Pharcyde's " She Said". "Western Eyes" is listed as sampling "Hookers & Gin" by the Sean Atkins Experience in the album's liner notes. Portishead, Somerset
Portishead ( ) is a town and civil parish in the North Somerset unitary authority area, in the county of Somerset, England. With a population of 26,366 at the 2021 Census, the town is located on the Severn Estuary opposite Cardiff and Newport, Wales, Newport in Wales. The town is to the west of Bristol and 18 miles northeast of Weston-super-Mare and approximately 110 miles (180 km) west of London. Portishead has a long history as a fishing port. As a royal manor it expanded rapidly during the early 19th century around the docks, with supporting transport infrastructure. Portishead Power Station
Portishead Power Station refers to a series of two coal and oil-fired power stations which operated in the dock area of Portishead in Somerset, South West England, between 1929 and 1982. The original coal-fired Portishead power station was built by Bristol Corporation's Electricity Department and started generating in 1929. It was later expanded, and renamed Portishead A Power Station after Portishead B Power Station opened in the early 1950s. The newer station had one-third of its boilers oil-fired and two-thirds coal-fired. Both power stations were later converted to fully oil-fired operation. They closed in the late 1970s and early 1980s respectively, and the buildings and dock area were demolished and cleared. The site of the two power stations is now occupied by housing and the dock has become a marina. Portishead Railway
The Portishead Railway is a branch line railway running from Portishead in North Somerset to the main line immediately west of Bristol, England. It was constructed by the Bristol & Portishead Pier and Railway Company, but it was always operated by its main line neighbour, and was more usually thought of as ''the Portishead branch'' or ''the Portishead railway''. It opened as a broad gauge () line to connect new docks at Portbury, at the west side of the mouth of the River Avon, with the railway network. The line opened to Portishead in 1867, and to the docks in 1879. The docks were always overshadowed by Bristol and Avonmouth docks. The ordinary passenger service declined in the twentieth century, leading to closure to passengers in 1964, and to all traffic in 1981. Portishead Railway Station
Portishead railway station was opened by the Bristol and Portishead Pier and Railway in 1867; it was approximately from the town of Portishead, Somerset, Portishead, North Somerset, England. After the opening of the Pier in 1870, the line was extended with an additional railway station opened by the pier. The Pier station closed first; and the original Portishead station closed in 1954, with a new Portishead station opened nearer the town. The 1954 station closed in 1964 when passenger services were withdrawn from the line. A resited new station is due to be opened to passenger traffic as part of MetroWest (Bristol), MetroWest, a scheme to increase rail services in the Bristol area.
