Porsanger (; ) is a List of municipalities of Norway, municipality in Finnmark Counties of Norway, county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Lakselv. Other villages in the municipality include Børselv, Brenna, Finnmark, Brenna, Indre Billefjord, Kistrand, Olderfjord, and Skoganvarre. The municipality is the 3rd largest by area out of the 357 municipalities in Norway. Porsanger is the 208th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 3,889 (many of whom have a Kven (Kainu) or Sami background). Porsanger Fjord
The Porsangerfjorden (; ; ) is a fjord in Finnmark county, Norway. Name The fjord is officially named ''Porsangerfjorden'' in Norwegian. It is also known informally as ''Porsangen'', but that is not an official name. The official Northern Sami name is and the official Kven name is . Geography The long fjord is Norway's fourth-longest fjord. It is located in Nordkapp Municipality and Porsanger Municipality and it empties out into the Barents Sea. The large island of Magerøya and the Porsanger Peninsula lie along the western shore of the fjord, and the Sværholt Peninsula lies along the eastern shore of the fjord. The Helnes Lighthouse sits at the mouth of the fjord, on the western coast. The village of Lakselv sits at the innermost part (southern part) of the fjord. Anders Porsanger
Anders Porsanger (1735, in Nordkapp – 10 October 1780, in Risør) was a North Sámi linguist and the first Sámi who received a higher education. In 1752, he was invited to assist professor Knud Leem in his efforts to create a Sámi dictionary, all the while pursuing his studies at the Trondheim Cathedral School. Porsanger continued his theological education in Copenhagen and successfully completed it in 1761. In the same year, he was designated a missionary to Varanger. In 1764, Porsanger returned to Trondheim to provide further support to Knud Leem while concurrently serving as a hospital priest. In 1769, the College of Mission in Copenhagen summoned him to address a proposal from the Hungarian Jesuit scientist-priest János Sajnovics. This proposal suggested that the Hungarian alphabet should be employed for writing in the Sámi language. Porsanger Peninsula
The Porsanger Peninsula () is a peninsula in Finnmark county, Norway. The large peninsula sits between the Altafjorden and the Porsangerfjorden and includes parts of the municipalities of Alta Municipality, Alta, Hammerfest Municipality, Hammerfest, Måsøy Municipality, Måsøy, Nordkapp Municipality, Nordkapp, and Porsanger Municipality, Porsanger. Stabbursdalen National Park lies on the southern end of the peninsula. The landscape of the Porsanger peninsula consists mainly of a treeless plain, a continuation of the Finnmarksvidda plateau to the south. A number of fjords cut into the peninsula, of which the largest are the Repparfjorden, Revsbotn, and Snefjorden from the west and the Kobbefjorden from the north. Jelena Porsanger
Jelena Porsanger (born 1967) is a Russian-born Norwegian Sami ethnographer who researches Sami culture and history. From 2011 to 2015, she was the rector of the Sámi University of Applied Sciences in Kautokeino, Norway. Early life and education Jelena Sergeyevna Semyjashkina was born in Loparskaya, Soviet Union in 1967, the same rural locality she grew up in on the Kola Peninsula, in the Kildin Saami area. However, her family background is from the Skolt Sami area near the border between Russia and Finland, and her father must have spoken Skolt Sami. Her parents were researchers of the Northern Lights at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Kola Science Centre under the Russian Academy of Sciences, and therefore, Porsanger was influenced at an early age to develop an academic career. Garrison Of Porsanger
The Garrison of Porsanger (), is a garrison based at Porsangmoen in Porsanger Municipality, in Finnmark county, Norway. It is located about from the village of Lakselv. The garrison is located immediately adjacent to Halkavarre, the largest military training area in Norway. Until 2011, it trained and housed the jegerkompani / ISTAR, formerly a part of the Finnmark regiment, together with Garnisonen i Sør-Varanger and Alta Battalion, as well as a petty officer's training centre for the Home Guard.
