Politics Of Assam
The political structure of Assam in India is headed by the ceremonial post of the Governors of Assam, Governor. He is assisted by a council of ministers, headed by the Chief Ministers of Assam, Chief Minister, who are members of the Legislative Assembly of Assam, Assam Assembly. In recent years the Governor has become more powerful, especially because the last two Governors have been Indian Army, ex-Army generals and the Army is entrusted with anti-insurgency operations against ULFA and other armed groups . Bimala Prasad Chaliha
Bimala Prasad Chaliha (26 March 1912 – 25 February 1971) was a Leader of Indian National Congress and a Freedom Fighter who was imprisoned at Jorhat Jail in 1942 for active participation in Mahatma Gandhi's Quit India Movement against the British Government. He was elected to the post of Chief Minister of Assam for Three Consecutive Terms, once from Badarpur Constituency and twice from Sonari Constituency. He was in office from 28 December 1957 to 6 November 1970. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1971. Asom Gana Parishad
Asom Gana Parishad (translation: ''Assam People's Council'', AGP) is a political party in the state of Assam, India. The AGP was formed following the historic Assam Accord of 1985 and formally launched at the Golaghat Convention held from 13 to 14 October 1985 in Golaghat, which also allowed Prafulla Kumar Mahanta who was the youngest chief minister of the state to be elected. The AGP has formed government twice once in 1985 then again in 1996. The popularity of AGP surged in the late 1980s but declined in the 2000s. After a 20-year gap, AGP, in alliance with National Democratic Alliance (India), NDA, won a Lok Sabha seat in 2024. Hiteswar Saikia
Hiteswar Saikia (3 October 1934 – 22 April 1996) was an Indian politician who served as the 10th chief minister of Assam for two terms, firstly from 28 February 1983 to 23 December 1985 and then from 30 June 1991 to 22 April 1996. He was the 1st Governor of Mizoram from 1987 to 1989 and the 6th Lieutenant Governor of Mizoram from 1986 to 1987. He was the education minister in the Government of Assam from and from 1980 to 1981 and again from 1982 to 1982. Kesab Chandra Gogoi
Kesab Chandra Gogoi (29 September 1925 – 5 August 1998) was an Indian politician who was the Chief Minister of the state of Assam for two months in 1982. For most of his political career, he was a member of Indian National Congress. He was a finance minister in the Assam state cabinet twice and a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Dibrugarh constituency. Gogoi was born into a family of Tai-Ahom. He was married to Shanti Gogoi in 1951. His wife was the daughter of Padma Kumari Gohain, one of the first female MLAs in Assam, as well as one of the first female state ministers in Assam. His wife was also the daughter of Jogesh Chandra Borgohain, who was an MLC in the 1930s. Anowara Taimur
Syeda Anwara Taimur (24 November 1936 – 28 September 2020) was an Indian politician, who was the chief minister of the Indian state of Assam from 6 December 1980 to 30 June 1981. She died in Australia on 28 September 2020. She was a leader of the Indian National Congress party in Assam and a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Jogendra Nath Hazarika (9 September 1924 – 1998) was an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 9 September 1979 to 11 December 1979. He was elected to the Lok Sabha, lower house of the Parliament of India from the Dibrugarh constituency, Assam in 1951, 1957, 1962 and 1967. Golap Borbora
Golap Borbora (; 29 August 1926 – 19 March 2006) was a chief minister of Indian state of Assam from 1978 to 1979. He was the first non congress chief minister of Assam. Borbora was a member of Rajya Sabha between 1968 and 1974. Early life He was born in Golaghat and had his early schooling in Tinsukia and then studied at the University of Calcutta. His parents were Komol Borbora (an executive officer from Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Digboi) and Puniyaprova Borbora. His father later left his job due to official issues (a long strike in the company). Samyukta Socialist Party
Samyukta Socialist Party (; SSP), was a political party in India from 1964 to 1974. SSP was formed through a split in the Praja Socialist Party (PSP) in 1964. In 1965, Ram Manohar Lohia merged his Socialist Party (Lohia) with SSP and contested in 1967 Indian general election. In 1972, SSP was reunited with PSP, forming the Socialist Party. But in December 1972, SSP was recreated after the split in Socialist Party. One faction of SSP led by Madhu Limaye and George Fernandes wanted to merge with PSP but another faction led by Raj Narain resisted the merger with PSP.
